Tui Na Massage
Tui-na/Acupressure is a form of Chinese bodywork therapy that dates back more than 4,000 years. It is considered one of the eight essential branches of Chinese Medicine, predates Acupuncture as a modality, and is used to relax muscles, relieve pain and enhance body energy. As in the case of Acupuncture, Tui-na /Acupressure stimulates the body's own restorative powers.
In comparison to Swedish massage or even Japanese shiatsu (which though similar is more closely associated with trigger point therapy,) Tui-na /Acupressure is a therapeutic method based on the Chinese Medical theory of the Meridian system, accompanied by a cultivated daily practice of Qi-gong and Dao Ying exercises. Tui-na is a physical expression of the flow of Qi from one human being to another. When done with correct intent, the strokes and techniques stimulate an exchange of Qi energy between the practitioner and the patient. Tui-na /Acupressure practitioners who apply Qi-gong in the treatments generate quicker healing results.
Tui-na includes the use of more than twelve different hand techniques that vary in degrees of strength, area of contact, and purpose (tonification or reduction). Hand manipulations and techniques are adjusted to suit the patient’s tolerance. Tui-na /Acupressure manipulations directly affect the flow of Qi at Acupuncture points, along meridians and across large muscle groups. External herbal liniments, salves, and compresses are also used to enhance the therapeutic effects.
Tui-na can be employed in the treatment of a variety of clinical disorders and is effective in alleviating pain syndromes. Due to its internal and external efficacy, Tui-na /Acupressure is now also widely recognized for its ability to help alleviate the symptoms associated with syndromes such as chronic fatigue, stress, and anxiety. Tui-na is also very effective in boosting energy, regulating Qi and blood, and balancing Yin and Yang.
Tui-na acupressure is available as an alternative to acupuncture in the treatment of children or patients who are sensitive to needles.
Pediatric Tui Na Acupressure
Pediatric Tui Na Acupressure is one of the major therapies for children’s health care since it is often more acceptable to children than herbal formulas and Acupuncture. It is considered “finger acupuncture” and is used to treat and prevent pediatric illness such as colds, cough, asthma, allergies, diarrhea, indigestion, bedwetting, near sightedness and wryneck.
Pediatric acupressure places particular emphasis on children’s mental and physical development and health. This healing process can begin in infancy and be used through adolescence. Specifically, pediatric spinal work is the most important way to prevent childhood diseases, build the immune system, and help skeletal development. Pediatric scalp work has been shown by scientific research to affect children’s IQ development and help children with ADD or ADHD.
Tui Na for Pregnancy and Labor
Depending upon the stage of fetal development, the growing fetus responds to specific types of touch therapy. Our Tui-na program for pregnant women is designed with this in mind. There are three main stages of development that correspond to Tui Na therapy. During the first stage, pregnant women need specific bodywork to provide enough nutrition and chemicals for the fetus to grow properly. During the second stage, Tui Na stimulates specific meridians and points for the fetus’s skeletal, muscular, nervous, skin and internal organ development. During the third stage, Tui Na helps pregnant woman through morning sickness, edema, shortness of breath, side effects of drug use, and pain from pregnancy. It also prevents infection and helps prepare for labor. Furthermore, this program includes fitness, cellulite treatment, varicose vein prevention and treatment, and weight loss after labor.
Chinese Reflexology
Reflexology is a compression massage technique used to stimulate the nerves of the feet and hands. Our hands and feet have specific points that correlate to specific internal organs and parts of the anatomy. Nerve endings embedded in the hands and feet connect all areas of the body through the spinal cord. It helps to promote relaxation, activate vital organs and encourage the natural healing process.
A reflexology treatment involves light; yet firm massage of the soles and tops of the feet. The reflex points are small and precision is important. Many patients experience dramatic results following the first session. Although all areas of the body will be affected by the treatment the therapist will usually concentrate on problem areas.
Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of reflexology in treating PMS, constipation, labor pains, hormone imbalance and nervous exhaustion. Reflexology is recommended for cancer patients undergoing therapy and patients with Alzheimer's disease or children with ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) since it carries the positive stimulation to the brain cells to improve concentration and memory.
Reflexology is contraindicated for pregnant women (prior to labor) and patients who have suffered injuries or fractures to the foot. Otherwise, it is a safe and effective form of therapy.
Scalp Therapy
Scalp therapy is a Finger Pushing Manipulation with benefit, which include lifting the spirits, encouraging creative thought, enhancing memory, and increasing longevity. It is commonly used for mental stress, weak concentration, memory loss, headaches, hair loss as well as pre/post-scalp surgery and face-lift surgery. Scalp therapy may also benefit those suffering from menopausal syndrome, infertility, and thyroid conditions, by balancing pituitary gland and endocrine function.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"]
Scalp therapy is a Chinese medical treatment performed by a skilled practitioner through the use of finger pressure, or an ox-horn or jade comb to stimulate acupuncture meridians and points on the scalp. The practitioner determines if there are excesses or deficiencies in the channels that run along the scalp, then he or she balances the Qi flowing through the area.
This therapy is commonly used for stress, weak concentration, memory loss, headaches, sequelae after stroke, panic attacks, and bi-polar disorder. In modern medical treatment, scalp therapy has been expanded to treat internal medical conditions such as paralysis, pain, indigestion, urinary tract infections, and more. Scalp therapy is also good preventive care for hair loss, pre- and post-scalp surgery, and face-lift surgery.
Dr. Ming Jin has written a book Named “ Endocrine-Neurological System Balance through Scalp Therapy”, illustrating that treatment of the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus help the endocrine and nervous systems to treat conditions such as PMS, menopause, infertility, thyroid problems, irritable bowel syndrome, and Graves’ disease.
According to modern research, scalp therapy can even adjust high FSH and PSA levels due to endocrinological problems. It can also be used to help people with endocrinological problems such as weight gain, acne during puberty, and water retention. This new research on scalp therapy will benefit many patients who have pituitary imbalances.
Modern scalp therapy utilizes Western medical anatomomical regions, such as the motor, vision, and speech areas, according to brain function. Modern research has proven that patients with a long history of amenorrhea caused by the imbalance of the pituitary gland would benefit from scalp treatment. Children who have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and patients with irritable bowel syndrome can also benefit from therapy along the pituitary and hypothalamus regions.
Scalp therapy should be done twice a week initially for three weeks, then once a week for a month, followed by once a month for maintenance. Treatments last from one-half hour to one hour depending on the problem to be treated.
Contraindications for scalp therapy include patients who have brain tumors, brain surgery, wounds, scars, infections, ulcers or trauma on the scalp. Post-surgical scalp treatment should be undertaken one month after the operation to help circulation and reduce swelling. [/expander_maker]
Shiatsu
More or less like TCM Pressing and Pushing Manipulation, Shiatsu therapy applies pressure by finger or palm from the brain-spine center moving out toward nerve endings to lead the energy flow and adjust the body’s physical unbalance. It is commonly used for healing soft tissue injury, loosening tension and tightness, providing a unique physical-mental relaxation and restoring proper internal organ function.
Joint/Spinal Manipulation
This treatment improves mobility and flexibility for shoulder, wrist, knee, hip, ankle and other joints using manual therapy to help Arthritis, joint injuries, circulation or soft tissue problems. It also works as a holistic healing procedure for the entire body through manipulating the spine and stimulating “Jia Ji” points (located on either side of the spinal column) to treat internal or external illness.
Massage
Ancient TCM body massage provides therapeutic kneading and circular rubbing by hand with even, gentle and penetrating force following the energy channel. It is a great therapy for releasing stress, easing pain, relaxing tension and restoring energy.
Herb-Aromatherapy Massage
A Customized Chinese herb and essential oil mixture applied using a caring, hands-on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, increase energy, reduce the effects of stress and restore lost balance to mind, body and soul. It maintains and promotes physical, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing.
Lymphatic Massage
Chinese herb oil applied along with Tui Na therapy following the Lymphatic channel to promote immune strengthening and system cleansing. It works for both lymphatic strengthening and drainage in the treatment of weight gain, water retention, cellulite and toxic stagnation.
Cupping & Gua Sha Therapy
Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy is the method of using glass or plastic cups to induce localized suction pressure by creating a vacuum. This therapy has been widely used across many Asian cultures for centuries. Cupping therapy has been found in ancient records dating back 3500 years, and it is still used today by many alternative medicine practitioners. Ancient methods include introducing fire to create a vacuum inside glass or bamboo cups. Modern cupping sets use suction to create the vacuum. The vacuum inside the cups causes the blood to pool in localized areas, to bring about healing in the area being treated. Technological and material advancements have been integrated with cupping therapies, which now incorporate many different treatments and applications.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"]
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, the meridians are pathways in the body through which the energy of life called Qi ("chi") flows. Qi also flows through every body part, tissue, and organ. Cupping therapy is mainly performed on the back because there are five main meridians that run through this area. When these meridians are opened, the internal energy is unblocked and therefore able to flow more freely throughout the entire body.
Another healing aspect of cupping therapy is through the release of toxins in the body. The suction from the cups can penetrate deep into the tissues causing the tissues to release harmful toxins. This triggers the lymphatic system, clears the blood vessels, and stretches and activates the skin.
Cupping therapy follows points along the meridians, in much the same way as Acupuncture and Acupressure. It is applied on different areas of the body to improve circulation and relieve stress. It is used to treat conditions such as pain, cough, and the common cold. Cupping therapy is also used in treating childhood asthma and diarrhea. The suction will leave some red marks on the body, but these will disappear within a few days.
Gua Sha Therapy
In Chinese language, the character Gua means to scrape or rub. Sha is a "reddish, elevated, millet-like skin rash”. Sha is also the term used to describe Blood stasis in the subcutaneous tissue, before and after it is raised as petechiae. Gua Sha is one technique that intentionally raises a Sha rash or petechiae. It is a traditional ancient Chinese healing technique that dates back over two thousand years.
Gua Sha therapy is still practiced by many TCM practitioners today. The technique involves the layering of Gua Sha oil on the skin. This oil is enhanced either with healing herbs or essential oils chosen to aid in the extraction of toxic waste. Depending on whether the treatment is for physical or emotional healing, the skin is then scraped in the area of discomfort, or at times on the entire body, using a specific Gua Sha tool.
In Chinese forms of healing, there are three types of bad or negative "Qi". The first type is dead "Qi", which refers to the stagnation of blood that has been in the body for a very long time without being released. This means the system is suffering from oxygen deprivation. Dead "Qi" is very harmful as it can encourage the growth of cancer cells. Cancer is anaerobic and cannot survive where oxygen is plentiful. The second type of bad "Qi" is stagnant "Qi". This can be caused by conditions such as lack of exercise, chronic heart, liver, kidney, spleen or lung conditions, and from obesity. Stagnant "Qi" is always associated with pain in various parts of the body. The third kind of bad "Qi" is toxic "Qi", where waste products or toxic residue accumulate in the system and when left untreated can result in very serious health problems.
Gua Sha creates suction on the skin that pulls stagnant intercellular fluid to the surface, removing toxic debris, and replacing it with fresh oxygenated, nutrient rich fluid, which in turn accelerates regeneration and revitalizes the region where unhealthy cells may or already have manifested. Gua Sha treats not only the meridian system but the entire system as well. This is why the Chinese utilize Gua Sha as their foremost treatment in the prevention of disease. Gua Sha can be used to treat, alleviate and heal chronic degenerative diseases, migraines, chronic neck, shoulder and back pain, bone spurs, strains and sprains, menstrual disorders, insomnia, heart disease, hypertension, vertigo, sinusitis, ear and eye disorders, chronic infections, sciatica, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, neuralgia, asthma, cysts and tumors, carpal tunnel syndrome, stress, digestive disorders, muscle aches, breast pain, varicose veins, skin disorders, blood disorders and liver, spleen, kidney, bladder, and pancreatic disorders and much more.
Gua Sha treatments are not painful. As the body is scraped it pushes a build-up of fluid to the surface of the skin, and after it passes, it leaves an indention or vacuum behind which draws toxic fluid out from deep within the tissue. The toxic fluid (Sha), floods to the surface and can be seen in small red, deep purple or green pools of blood, it is also often hot on the area where the toxic heat is extracted. Red spots are an indication that toxins are being released. Where the area is deep purple, the blood is old and extremely stagnant. A dark green discoloration is a sign that stagnant blood and toxic "Qi" are being released from the system. Sometimes a clear fluid will draw to the surface in a form that resembles cellulite or goose bumps. Where the skin starts out with a green glow, which then turns red during the treatment; this is a sign that pain or stagnant "Qi" is being removed. The exposing of the Sha is literally removing disease from deep within the system.
Gua Sha Therapy, promoting "Qi" or vital life energy and blood circulation as well as the removal of toxic heat, stagnant blood and lymph fluid from the body, is an extremely important, almost miraculous method of improving one's health.
Gua Sha treatment is often used in the treatment of flu, skin rash, allergies, and cold symptoms. Practitioner use jade or ox horn Gua Sha tools with herb oil to rub patient's meridians to remove toxins and restore energy flow. It brings a great benefit for those patients who suffer from chronic pain, excess systemic toxicity, poor circulation, lymphatic congestion, Inflammation, fatigue, Infections, and physical or emotional stress.[/expander_maker]
Herb Spa & Fire Therapy
Herb Spa
Chinese Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds mixed with Chinese herbal tinctures for the purpose of altering a person's mind, mood, cognitive function or health. Some essential oils, such as tea tree oil, have demonstrated anti-microbial effects against bacterial, fungal, or viral infections.
Herb-aroma Massage provides a customized Chinese herb and essential oil mixture applied with a caring, hands-on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, increase energy, and reduce the effects of stress and restore balance, while maintaining and promoting physical, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing. Herb-aroma recipes can also be applied along lymphatic pathways to aid in detoxification and strengthen immune and lymphatic function to promote drainage in the treatment of weight gain, water retention, cellulite and toxic stagnation.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"]
Herb-aroma Baths refer to varied fine aromatherapy recipes for washing, soaking or sitz bath, for the purpose of energy restoration, as well as mind and body relaxation. Herb-aroma baths provide great healing potential in conditions such as pain, insomnia, hair loss, varicose veins, cold, flu, cough, hay fever, skin rash, dry skin and genital infection.
Tibetan Herb Steam/Bath is a centuries-old traditional medical therapy that employs herbs and minerals as physical therapies to treat illness. Skin represents the largest organ of the human body. It not only protects the body from invasion of disease, but also maintains the functions of secretion, absorption, penetration and sensing. Since skin absorbs better with higher humidity, the well selected Tibetan herb combination, applied on the body through the use of steam, is then directly absorbed through the skin to the blood stream and lymphatic system to help regulate body system balance.
The herbal steam contains fragrant and pungent ingredients to transform turbidity through the skin and channels, traveling to the nervous system for stimulation and regulation of the endocrinal and immune systems. It regulates the nervous system, relaxes muscles, reduces pain, improves joint function, increases metabolism and improves sleep. It also helps detoxify the body, boost the immune system, and helps alleviate symptoms such as pain, swelling, soreness, numbness, stiff joints, and cold hand/feet, cold body or interior cold.
Tibetan Herb Steam can also be used for its anti-aging effect for maintaining youthful skin and beauty. In Chinese medicine, the human body is an organic whole consisting of various parts, so the appearance of the human face and hair are closely related to the status of the inner organs. One important factor in skin aging is dehydration and the lack of water and protein in epidermis, leading to dryness of cells which creates hardened, peeling and wrinkled skin. Tibetan Herb Steam provides the power of heat combined with skin nourishing herbs to maintain abundant Qi and Blood, balance Yin and Yang, and regulate the overall health condition to promote beautiful and healthy skin. It also provides various alkaloids, Glycosides, amino acids, vitamins and plant hormones to moisturize the skin, increase the skin’s immune function, protect skin cells, increase elasticity, slow aging, brighten the complexion, fight wrinkles and eliminate body odor.
Tibetan Herb Steam/Bath is suitable for the following:
- Sub-healthy people, who tire easily, are prone to catch colds or flu, have hair loss, dizziness, insomnia, constipation, weight gain, or poor appetite.
- People who suffer from injured lumbar muscles, neck or shoulder problems, Rheumatoid arthritis, Sciatica, vertebra injuries or disorders, bone density deficiencies, etc.
- Female clients who would suffer from dry skin, weight gain, irregular menstruation, hormonal imbalance, cold hands and feet, or to promote anti-aging.
- Male clients who suffer from prostate disorders, hemorrhoids, sexual deficiency, hair loss, difficulty concentrating, or to promote strengthen muscle tone.
- Skin discoloration, cold sores or ulcers, dryness, itchiness, fungal infection, and edema.
- Those with stubborn fat, for weight loss. Every 1 cc of sweat from our body is equal to the consumption of 500 calories and 45 minutes of steaming a day can produces about 1000 cc sweat, equal to jogging 10 kilometers!
Fire Therapy
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Fire is one of the elements of nature (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) and also of our body. Immediately after the body stops breathing (in death) the heat leaves our body. Heat /fire /oxygen /temperature keep the body physiologically active, driving all biochemical reactions and helping in the purification of mind and body.
Heat is what propels physical movement within the body. In a heated area, increased blood flow carries more nutrients and supplements to the body, while simultaneously removing waste and toxins. Fire therapy plays a very importance role in improving lymphatic circulation and strengthening immune function to defend against disease-causing organisms, thereby providing detoxification for mind and body.
The Fire Therapy procedure consists of the application of herbal products (with a specific formula for each condition under treatment) on the area of the affected organ. The area is covered with a towel soaked in alcohol which is then lit. The heat produced by the burning of the alcohol is easily borne by the patient. The procedure can be ceased if the patient feels any form of discomfort. The vasodilation effect produced by the fire accelerates the local blood circulation and metabolism. Thus, the curing substances of the herbs will be carried directly to the affected organ which will provide an immediate response at the local level. The efficacy of the procedure has been clinically shown to be especially effective in cases of spinal diseases/disorders.
Fire Therapy is often used for patients with chronic pain conditions, functional disorders, or a variety of stress related illnesses. It helps ease the symptoms of indigestion, low metabolism, low temperature, melancholy, pain, stress, tension, insomnia, anxiety, fear, panic attacks, stomach distension, diarrhea, vertigo, hiatal hernia, benign tumors, joint pain, arthritis, bone deformation, joint inflammation, menopausal syndrome and nerve inflammation (sciatic nerve, neurological disorders, etc.). In short, fire therapy is good for diseases caused by the excess condition of phlegm as well as Yang deficiency. Abdominal Fire Therapy can be very effective in helping maintain youthful energy, flattening the tummy and reducing wrinkles.[/expander_maker]
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is an ancient therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine that is particularly effective in preventing illness. It is the harmless, painless process of burning Moxa, (the dried leaves of the common Mugwort (Artemeisa) plant,) on Acupuncture needles that are inserted in the body for quick absorption. It provides gentle heat and tonifies the meridians. To suit different therapeutic needs, the Moxa can also be made into a small cone and burned over skin through an herbal cake. It is a highly effective way to increase the body’s energy, boost the immune system, strengthen sexual function, and balance hormones.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"]
Moxibustion has the function of warming and clearing the meridians and tonifying the body's energy. Different points are employed for specialized treatments and preventive care needs. The practitioner diagnoses each patient individually and prescribes a healthcare plan based on his or her specific diagnosis and presentation. Moxibustion is particularly effective in the treatment of arthritis, asthma, fatigue, chronic pain, chronic bronchitis, stomachache, sexual dysfunction, menopause and conditions related to aging.
Patients should not receive Moxibustion if they have a fever, cold, flu, infectious conditions, mouth sores, hepatitis, or high blood pressure. Furthermore, pregnant women should avoid Moxibustion on the abdominal and lumbosacral regions.
Anyone with numbness in the arms, legs, feet, or toes should not undergo Moxibustion therapy.
Summer Moxibustion:
According to TCM theory, Moxibustion is best performed during the summer, as the pores of our skin open wider and outer substances are more easily absorbed. Moxibustion can be performed year-round in the treatment of various diseases. For preventive care, it is done three times a year during the First Summer, Middle Summer, and End Summer periods of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, which fall between the months of June to August.
We highly recommend patients with any of the following health conditions consider moxibustion therapy:
