TCM Wellness Center

The focus of TCM wellness care is on Natural Healing & Preventive Care

"A skillful doctor cures illness when there is no sign of disease and thus the disease never comes." - Huan Nan Zi, 120 B.C.

For over 4,000 years, prevention of disease has been the abiding principle in Chinese healthcare. The onset of disease was regarded as a failure of preventive medicine rather than a normal occurrence as it is today, and the use of medicinal drugs was always a last resort. This preventive aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine is an important part of our services at Ming Qi Natural Healthcare Center. TCM Wellness is based on the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as Yin and Yang, Wu Xing (5 Element Theory,) and the use of Herbs, Acupuncture, Massage, Tai Qi and Qi Gong to maintain health, prevent disease, rejuvenate, and maintain beauty and psychological wellbeing.

Ming Qi Natural Healthcare Center provides TCM Wellness Programs such as:

Seasonal Healthcare

  • Season Healthcare-Spring
  • Season Healthcare-Summer
  • Season Healthcare-Autumn
  • Season Healthcare-Winter

Regardless of what we do for a living, or where we live, we remain connected to the rhythms of nature. The expanding, contracting, warming, and cooling cycles of the seasons are mirrored in our own bodies. Seasonal changes will bring about different influences toward the Qi and blood of our bodies and thus make our bodies vulnerable to different illnesses. Our own individual life cycles also interact with and respond to these larger patterns in nature. TCM bases each individual healthcare treatment upon this practical, essential understanding. Preventive medicine undertaken during one season also prepares our bodies to withstand the changes of the next season.

The Huang Di Nei Jing (Inner Cannon) is one of the most famous, magnificent and highly regarded masterpieces of Chinese Medicine. From this work, we derive the 5 Element Theory and the concept of development in spring, growth in summer, harvest in autumn and storage in winter, meaning we must practice skills and nourish the body in accordance with the four seasons. It is believed that once we are at one with and conform to the season’s turnover and changes, we will then posses health and longevity. In spring, Yang is increasing and Yin is decreasing, therefore we need to focus on nourishing Yang. Spring is the season of growing and greening, and spring is also the season of the liver organ. Summer is the peak of increasing Yang and decreasing Yin. Summer is about expansion, growth and activity, therefore we need to focus on nourishing the Heart. In autumn Yin is increasing and Yang is decreasing, therefore nourishing Yin is key. Autumn is the harvest season. It is the time for our bodies to harvest and gather energy. This season is related to the Lung. Winter is the season of collection and storage. It is a time for stillness and reflection. It is very important to build Yin and support the kidneys in winter; otherwise it may prove harmful to your kidneys.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"]

  • Season Healthcare-Spring

Spring is the season when the ascending and active energy surges upward after winter’s slumber, instigating movement and arousing the mind. The energizing, warming season of spring is a time of increased blood circulation and production of hormones, qualities associated with youthfulness, sexual activity and high energy.

Regulating liver function

According to Chinese medical theory, this is the season to attend to the organs of the liver and gall bladder, and to regulate the upward and outward flow of energy. When the liver is harmonious, there is calmness and attentiveness. People with vital livers are leaders, decision makers and problem solvers who are never stressed or tense. When hindered, stagnant, or overheated, the energy flow in the liver and throughout the body is hampered, resulting in myriad physical and emotional disturbances. For this reason, patients will have aggravated symptoms in the spring related to the liver energy. During the spring, acupuncture and acupressure treatments can help to regulate the flow of liver Qi to help you feel balanced and rooted.

Energizing facial and hair care

Spring is an important time for cleansing impurities and detoxifying the body. The preferred sites of spring treatments are the face and skin, home to sensitive acupuncture points that easily absorb herbal medicines. The skin is our largest organ of elimination. Facial diagnosis will show blockages throughout the body. Spring health care includes massage, neck and facial acupuncture and rejuvenating facial treatments made from fresh flower combinations, honey and pure pearl powder. These treatments promote the production of life-giving hormones, improve circulation of blood, refresh and tone the skin, and, help prevent allergies and spring colds.

Preventing hay fever

Spring is also the season when hay fever, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and allergic asthma occur, so the prevention of those diseases should be started during the prior winter season. Preventive treatments in the spring also include herbal teas, such as “Flu-Cold Tea”, or “Hay fever Tea /HQ for preventing spring colds, flu and hay fever.

Recommended therapy and products:

  • Acupuncture for the purpose of regulating the Liver
  • Hay fever treatment and prevention
  • Lymphatic drainage massage
  • 5 – Element “Wood” facial for refreshing the skin tone
  • Scalp therapy for new hair growth
  • “Flu-Cold Tea” for care of flu-like symptoms
  • Hay fever Tea /HQ granules (in tea or gel cap form) for hay fever prevention and treatment.
  • Liver Cleansing Tea for detoxification

  • Season Healthcare-Summer

Summer is the season which presents as the most Yang, with the highest levels of metabolism. Essential body fluids are lost through excess sweating. Summer seasonal healthcare should include nourishing Yin and clearing heat. It is also recommended to eat light food during the summer season to avoid harming Qi and Jin (fluids)

Summer moxibustion

Summer moxibustion is a traditional TCM therapy which is applied annually. It is best performed during the summer as the pores of our skin open wider and outer substances are more easily absorbed. Moxibustion can be done year-round to treat different diseases. For preventive care, it is done three times a year during the First Summer, Middle Summer, and End Summer. All three of these times fall during June to August according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Moxibustion is the harmless, painless burning of special herbs on the body for quick absorption. Different points are employed for specialized treatments. For example, treatment could be applied to the lower abdomen to enhance sexual energy. This is also known as “anti-aging therapy “or “the second spring youth therapy” because of natural stimulation of the sex hormones. Moxibustion applied on either side of the spine can strengthen bone density to help prevent and treat osteoporosis as well as promote general wellness. It is said that moxibustion applied to the points “Zu San Li” on the stomach meridian will strengthen the immune system and prevent illness. Moxibustion offers effective treatment for chronic pains, arthritis, asthma, chronic bronchitis, stomachache, sexual dysfunction, menopause symptoms, and depleted immune systems. Protecting body from “Summer Heat”.

The hot, bright season of summer is mirrored by an expansive response from our bodies. People often suffer from dehydration in the summer resulting in fatigue, loss of appetite, weakness and dryness. In TCM this is referred to as “Zhu Xia—Heat Attack” which may result in body fluid deficiency and energy exhaustion. Herbal teas mixed from Chamomile, Jasmine, Aloe, Lavender, Rose and Ginger bring relief from these symptoms, benefit the body’s balance and protect organs from heat damage. During the summer, people are also vulnerable due to eating more raw and cold foods and utilizing strong air conditioning in their environment, which may harm the digestive function and hinder the circulation of Qi and blood.

Summer skin protection care

There are special herbal lotions used for summer skin care. Differing from sun block, herbal lotions mixed with multi-Vitamins not only work toward avoiding damage from the sun or heat, but also nourish skin and heal sun burn, skin marks, summer skin rash, heat rash, boils, dryness or sensitive skin. These are great products for families to have on hand since they are useful for both adults and children.

Weight loss and fitness

Our summer weight loss program concentrates on body detoxification, since perspiration is considered a natural way to shed excess water and dissolve abnormal fatty accumulations. The program includes acupuncture for increasing the metabolism, Herbal rubbing and steaming for promoting sweat to cleanse the systems and promote lymphatic drainage, and herbal teas for cleansing the liver and digestive system.

Recommended therapies and products:

  • Summer Moxibustion
  • Daily heat cleansing tea
  • Summer skin lotion
  • Summer weight loss program

  • Season Healthcare-Autumn

In 5-Element Theory, the autumn season maintains influence over the Lung organ. As the Lungs control the Qi, Autumn Seasonal Healthcare should follow the season‘s change in order to maintain the lung Qi and avoid respiratory disorders. In Autumn, temperatures range from daytime highs to evening lows. It is best to get to sleep early during this time of year to avoid evening cold, and likewise to get up early to breathe the morning’s fresh air. During “Qiu Dong” or late Autumn attention turns to exercise to enhance our ability to adapt to the change of weather, as opposed to simply rushing to put on more layers and warmer clothing.

Replenishing body fluids

When days get shorter and sunlight decreases, our body systems also slow down. In autumn, the weather turns cooler and the human body begins to lack nourishing fluids. As the human body is connected with universal energy changes, Autumn Seasonal healthcare should focus on replenishing these essential body fluids. The Herbal tonic “Autumn Treasure Juice” boosts Yin energy to nourish the internal organs to help relieve symptoms such as dry cough, dry or irritated throat, dry eyes, poor vision, chronic thirst, insomnia, gassy stomach, indigestion, constipation, vaginal dryness and irregular menstruation.

Skin and scalp nourishment

The function of the Lung is to descend and disperse qi throughout the body. It receives qi through the breath, and exhales the waste. The Lung governs the skin and hair and also governs the exterior (one part of immunity). A properly functioning Lung organ will ensure the skin and hair are of good quality and that the immune system is strong and able to fight disease.

Similar to the life force of plants moving to the roots while the dry leaves fall away, our body fluids also diminish and hair becomes more brittle in the autumn. Skin follicles are more closed than in summer, which while helping prevent illness arising from the coming colder weather invading the body, this in turn causes our skin to become more dry and sensitive.

Medicinal herbal teas taken orally are recommended during this time, to increase energy and replace lost fluids from the body, organs, skin and scalp. The natural substances in the teas provide the proper nourishment for the body, and strengthen the immune system to help prevent colds and other sicknesses related to seasonal changes. Autumn skin care treatments involve facial massage along with the application of extracts such as ginseng, bird’s nest, aloe and flower petals. Scalp therapy enhances blood circulation to the head to help improve the condition of the hair, increase concentration, treat dandruff, hair loss, thinning hair, sensitive or dry skin, and promote skin metabolism to help slow the aging process and promote anti-aging.

Preventing autumn allergies

The normal direction of the Lung is downwards, when Lung qi "rebels" it goes upwards, causing coughing and wheezing. When the Lung is weak, there can be skin conditions such as eczema, thin or brittle hair, and a propensity to catching colds and flu. The Lung is weakened by dryness and the emotion of grief or sadness. The dryness that is often associated with autumn season leads to Lung sensitivity resulting in conditions such as dry cough, asthma, and autumn hay fever.

Sang Xing Tea moistens bronchial dryness and soothes the bronchioles to prevent sensitivity of the airway. The skin is also affected by this type of seasonal dryness, causing the skin to be fragile and increasing propensity towards hives, dryness, and itchiness. TCM Autumn seasonal healthcare offers the juice of seasonal flowers mixed with Royal Jelly which is the traditional treatment therapy to nourish the skin, while pearl powder mixed with juice of seasonal flowers is a traditional method of preventing skin dryness.

  • Season Healthcare-Winter

Winter is the season of collection and storage. The cold weather slows blood circulation. In TCM theory, Cold is thought to easily damage the Yang Qi, therefore, Winter Seasonal Healthcare focuses on Nourishing, and Herbal Dietary Therapy is the best means available to promote Winter Nourishing. Keeping pace with the stillness, and the reflection of Yang and protection of Yin are the principles of Winter Herbal Dietary Therapy

Tonics to build strength

In winter, many animals and plants go into hibernation. Similarly, the pores of our skin close down and we hoard the warmth of our bodies in order to protect ourselves from the cold. Since we ourselves cannot hibernate, this is a time for strong herbal tonics, like Da Bu Gao. Prepared individually for different ages and body constitutions, this strengthening tonic nurtures our immune system and provides energy to meet the coldest and darkest season. Winter tonics generally consist of 20 to 40 different herbs mixed with ginseng, cordyceps, donkey hide gelatin, colla cornus cervi, and tortoise plastron, with the addition of brown rock sugar, jujube and walnuts so as to make the tonic more effective and tasty. The tonic is usually employed to promote the immune system, metabolism and blood circulation and is especially recommended for strengthening sexual energy and maintaining balanced sexual hormone levels. (Please see our brochure “Da Bu Gao” for more information)

Winter Reflexology

Due to the cold of the winter season, the circulation in the “Five tips” (hands, feet and head,) slows and micro blood vessels tense to slow blood circulation. Our heart has to work harder to pump the blood flow through our entire body. Reflexology plays a more important role during the winter than in any other season, since it is the best natural therapy to improve the body’s blood circulation and enhance organ function.

After checking the pulse and observing the tongue, TCM practitioners diagnose the body’s health condition and prescribe the proper herbal formula for soaking the feet. Next, reflexology is applied on the hands, feet and scalp to increase circulation and improve internal organs’ and systems’ function. Winter “Tip Therapy” is a very useful and effective way to help people maintain a healthy life style during the cold weather season. This treatment is especially effective for those patients suffering from chronic fatigue, poor circulation, decreased libido, edema or swelling of the knees, legs, wrists and fingers, cold feet and hands, arthritis, insomnia, stress and anxiety. It is a very soothing, warm, energizing and soulful therapy that helps address the needs of various health conditions.[/expander_maker]

We also offer preventative guidance aimed at reducing the incidences of breast and ovarian cancer. [expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"] Special Herbal Formulas for Women’s Healthcare
Menopex / GNL Helps alleviate symptoms associated with menopausal syndrome.
Osteo-Essence / MG Eases the symptoms from bone degenerated change or Bone density loss.
Da Bu Gao Tonifies Qi and Blood to ease the symptoms associated with menopausal syndrome.

  • Puberty
Becoming a teen is a milestone in every girl's life. Puberty is a time of sexual hormone development in which the growing body is receptive to Chinese medical therapies that will help it progress to its full potential. Beginning at the onset of menstruation (menarche), Chinese herbs can play an important role in this stage of hormonal development. If proper care is taken during this time of growth, many discomforts later in life can be mitigated. Preventive healthcare will safeguard menarche and prevent irregular menstruation and various vaginal or urinary infections. Puberty Skin Care is a great concern amongst pubescent girls as hormonal development may affect the condition of the skin. Premenstrual or ovulatory acne break outs, excess or abnormal hair growth associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome or oily, rough, skin due to long term use of oral contraceptives are just a few of the conditions that respond well to our various treatment therapies. Using acupuncture, herbal remedies and classic Chinese facial treatments, TCM provides a natural means of balancing hormones to help achieve and maintain beautiful, healthy skin. Precocious puberty, also referred to as early puberty, is a medical condition that is five to six times more common among girls than boys. These girls experience the changes associated with the onset of puberty such as breast development and the growth of pubic hair several years earlier than what was previously considered the norm. It's long been known that very overweight girls tend to mature faster at an earlier age, while thin girls and athletic girls may experience delayed puberty. In rare cases, if accompanied by other symptoms such as headaches and seizures, early signs of puberty might indicate a condition of the central nervous system. The current Western medical treatment for precocious puberty involves monthly injections of hormone-like substances (one is marketed as Lupron) that suppress the reproductive hormones. Hormone therapy will stop the progression of breast development, skeletal maturation and slow height and weight increases. The use of acupuncture and Chinese herbs can work as effectively as pharmaceuticals for adjusting abnormal growth hormone development, without the risk of severe side effects.

  • Sexual Health and Birth Control
After the onset of puberty, young girls need to be properly educated in order to become prepared for being sexually active adults. Providing this type of information in a safe supportive environment will help ease the transition to this phase of life and may help prevent sexually transmitted disease and unwanted pregnancy. Topics include: What are the four phases of the sexual response cycle? How may oral sex spread infection to the genital region? What is the appropriate age to undertake sexual activity according to the physical development? What is masturbation and how does it affect other sexual activity? etc. Birth control is another area of concern for young girls/women who want control and choice over their reproductive function. There are various forms of birth control available; each having its own pros and cons. Available methods include: Hormonal methods: such as oral contraceptives ("the Pill"), quarterly birth control injections, skin patches, and the vaginal ring. (The Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) also contains a hormone.) Hormonal methods prevent pregnancy in a number of ways, including stopping monthly egg production. Acupuncture may be employed to reduce the side effects such as headache, weight gain, puffiness or irregular menstruation associated with hormonal methods. Intrauterine device (IUD) is a copper or plastic device placed in the uterus through the vagina and cervix. It interferes with sperm reaching and fertilizing an egg. It can also stop a fertilized egg from implanting and growing into an embryo. Monthly acupuncture on the sacral area can prevent the lower back pain and excessive menstrual bleeding often associated with IUD use. Barrier methods: include condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, Lea's Shield, sponges, and spermicides. In general, barrier methods are less effective than IUDs or hormonal methods. Adding herbal sitz baths or douches to the use of these barrier methods can help increase their effectiveness as well as prevent vaginal infections. • Labor
Preparation for labor - pre-delivery acupuncture and acupressure treatment is performed on the sacral area in order to help shorten the labor process and promote contraction of the uterus. It is also a natural, safe and effective way to enhance muscle strength for delivery and alleviate pain during labor. The treatment is usually begun one week prior to the due date. Acupuncture has also been employed successfully for thousands of years to induce women who are overdue in their pregnancy. Pre/post surgical therapy is available for women scheduled for caesarian section. Pre-surgical therapy is usually applied 2 days prior to surgery, with the focus on managing stress, preventing infection, reducing blood loss, enhancing the effect of anesthesia and reducing its side effects,. Post surgical therapy includes acupuncture points on the abdomen and leg to help heal the scar from the surgical incision and aid in overall recovery. Acupressure has been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting after caesarian section. There is also a special Chinese Medicine tea for women to drink during the labor process that both helps strengthen energy and prevents dehydration. Post labor care (Zuo Yue Zi—Month Long Care) Due to loss of blood, vital essence and energy, a woman’s body is fragile and depleted after the birth experience. At this time, women are susceptible to many illnesses and far worse, if care is not taken to recover properly after giving birth. Traditional Chinese Medical theory recommends one month’s confinement post labor, during which time the mother should avoid lifting weights, eating raw and/or cold food, exposure to wind, swimming and excessive exercise. According to TCM, these activities are detrimental to pelvic recovery, absorption in the gastro-intestinal tract, and circulation of the qi and blood. In postnatal healthcare, the first week after birth is an important time to take herbs to: detoxify the body from any medication used during the labor, clear stasis from the endometrium, speed the contraction of the uterus to return to normal size, and produce nutritious breast milk. Within that period, Chinese herbs can be used to regulate recovery care where the focus is shifted to rebuilding the mother’s strength and conditioning of all her organs, which have toiled particularly hard in the last trimester of the pregnancy to provide for both the mother and the fetus. Post labor monthly acupuncture care provides the following benefits:
  • Enhancing immunity to prevent infection,
  • Balancing hormones to induce milk production and prevent mastitis,
  • Increasing circulation to achieve healthy muscles, joints and bone density,
  • Relieving stress and boosting energy to avoid post partum depression,
  • Wellness plan for body fitness, hair and skin care, and
  • Hormone meridian stimulation for the recovery of the libido and sexual energy.
Click “Pregnancy and Lactation” for more information

  • Lactation
A good recovery of the mother’s constitution will also ensure ample lactation. Herbal medicine can be used for women who lack milk or for women whose milk does not flow fluidly and tend toward breast masses. For women who suffer from mastitis, Chinese herbs taken orally and applied externally can provide natural relief without the aid of antibiotics. Furthermore, from the second month onward, acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, and a good replenishing diet, can aid the mother in recovering her physical shape and overall health more quickly following the birthing process. Some of the more common breastfeeding problems are as follow: Sore Nipples Many women find that their nipples not only feel sore after every feeding, but that they are also red and pointy instead of round and smooth -- all indications that the baby is not latching on properly. This means that the nipple ends up way in the back of the baby's mouth where the hard and soft palates meet. The solution is to insert a finger into the corner of the baby's mouth to break the latch as soon as one feels pain -- and then try latching on again. Ideally, the baby should take at least one inch of the areola into their mouth. The patient can ease pain by avoiding the use of soap on the breasts, which can be drying and irritating. Instead, wash with plain water. They might also let some milk air dry on the breast after feeding, which can help reduce some of the inflammation and soreness. Infections or Painful Lumps: New moms may develop a sore or tender spot on their breast, or even a painful lump. This commonly results from a blocked milk duct, or the beginning of an infection known as mastitis. If the pain is from a blocked milk duct, it would be helpful to apply moist or dry heat compresses to the breast for 10 minutes, three times a day. Also, acupuncture and massage on the breast with heat therapy will help unblock the duct. After expressing some milk, the pain will be greatly reduced. Continuing to feed from that breast is important because breastfeeding helps the ducts remain open. It is still safe to breastfeed even during infection because breast milk contains such a high level of antibodies. Acupuncture is extremely effective in the prevention and treatment of blocked milk ducts, and treating infections with symptoms such as pain, tenderness, fatigue and fever. Yeast Infections or Thrush Yeast infections are a less troubling but still uncomfortable condition on the surface of the breast skin. This problem can develop even after weeks or months of successful nursing. The culprit is thrush, a form of yeast infection that thrives on milk. This infection will likely affect both mom and baby. Signs of thrush include red or pink shiny skin that usually itches, and may flake or peel. To learn if your baby is infected, look for white spots on the inside of the cheeks, or sometimes a persistent diaper rash. Patients might also find that they have symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection -- a clumpy white discharge and extreme itchiness. Traditional treatments for yeast infection or Thrush are Herbal formulas for external use via sitz bath or soaking. Engorged Breasts Engorgement is normal and can develop when your milk begins to flood your breasts, usually between the second and sixth day after a woman starts nursing her baby. Once milk starts to come into the ducts there is also a flooding of lymph fluid and blood which causes the tissue in the breast to swell. Because that swollen tissue pushes down on the milk ducts, the ducts can sometimes clamp shut. When milk can't be expressed, it builds up inside the breast and engorgement occurs. Showers are not recommended when patients have engorged breasts. Most important is to keep on nursing. The more milk that is expressed, the less chance you have of engorgement. Aromatherapy lymphatic drainage massage is extremely effective in the treatment of engorged breasts. Click “Pregnancy and Lactation” for more information

  • Menopause
Menopause is a period of a woman’s life wherein certain levels of hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone begin to decline. This is a normal part of a woman’s aging process and begins two to five years before her last menstrual period. It is usually complete when one or more years have passed since the last menstrual cycle. Menopause is caused by the declination of the hormonal levels. Total hysterectomy or surgical removal of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes can induce early menopausal symptoms. Other factors that may influence the early onset of menopause may include heavy smoking, removal of the pituitary gland, chemotherapy, and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Some symptoms of menopause include changes to the menstrual cycle, hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, heart palpitations, joint pain, headaches, vaginal dryness, skin, hair and urinary changes. Due to the decline of estrogen, women undergoing menopause are at a higher risk for osteoporosis, vaginal dryness and itching, vaginal infections, pain during sexual intercourse, uncontrollable leakage of urine, urinary tract infection, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, hypertension, stroke, and weight gain. Symptoms of Menopausal Syndrome, such as night sweats, stress, palpitations and hot flashes can be troublesome and patients often feel at a loss. The symptoms of hormonal imbalance haunt many women. In Western medicine, estrogen is used to help alleviate menopausal symptoms, but may result in increased incidences of breast cancer. By choosing not to take supplemental estrogen, menopausal women are confronted with increased chances of developing osteoporosis, not to mention a series of other symptoms that may also be left unresolved. In the treatment of Menopausal Syndrome, Chinese medicine is an effective alternative therapy with proven clinical results used to stimulate the production of estrogen steadily and safely. We offer various programs to help deal with the effects of menopausal syndrome, such as:
  • Hot Flash Treatment: Acupuncture treatment has been shown to improve the ovarian function to naturally increase estrogen production. Used in China for over 2000 years, Herbal formula Menopex / GN has been found to regulate hormone levels and alleviate hot It may also be used as a daily anti-aging supplement since it can also nourish women’s essential energy.
  • Osteoporosis Prevention / Treatment: Moxibustion along with herbs applied along the spinal and hip areas is very effective in the prevention/treatment of osteoporosis. Herbal formula Osteo-Essence / MG has undergone extensive clinical trials and is widely available in China for the treatment of
  • Heart (Cardiac) Health: Women undergoing menopause are highly susceptible to developing high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Since these conditions are closely associated with hormonal changes, acupuncture and herbal treatment to balance hormones will help in managing overall heart health. This treatment also eases the symptoms of insomnia, irregular heartbeat, palpitations, and panic attacks.
  • Dryness (Hair, Skin and Vaginal): Da Bu Gao for women is very useful in the treatment of hair loss, skin dryness, and burning, itching, and dry sensation in the vagina. It may also be taken internally for facial and skin care. Facial and body massage with herbal aromatherapy is also a greatly effective therapy to treat the symptoms of
  • Concentration and Memory Enhancement: Scalp acupuncture and acupressure are recommended for the menopausal patient to improve concentration and memory. It is also effective for treating/preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Foot reflexology combined with herbal soaks also has been shown to be highly beneficial for the enhancement of concentration and memory.
  • Weight Gain: Acupuncture and herbal therapy will help in managing weight gain through balancing hormones, controlling the appetite, improving the metabolism and promoting internal detoxification. Ear acupuncture points have been shown to be very effective in the treatment of obesity, and “fat burning” herbal massage is recommended in the treatment of cellulite.[/expander_maker]

Men’s Healthcare

-Maintaining proper hormonal balance is the key to most preventative healthcare for men-

  • Teenage Acne
  • Hair Loss
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Prostate Conditions
  • Sports Injuries
  • Obesity
  • Concentration/ Memory / Dementia

  • Adolescence and Puberty

Like women, men also experience their own conditions related to hormonal balance. Regular check-ups should begin from adolescence when genital organs begin to mature. Androgen plays an important role in stimulating the growth of bone cells and muscle cells. A balanced development of androgen will help the development of the skeletal system of the male adolescent, and the stable development will also ensure the establishment of a healthy personal character. Cowardice, introversion, apathy, or agitated, violent tendencies have a close relationship with insufficient hormone development. Traditional Chinese medical (TCM) theory emphasizes the tonification of kidney jing (essence) for adolescents whose sex hormone levels are not fully developed.

  • Teenage Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that can have many forms. Generally, acne refers to acne vulgaris, which is associated with the bacteria called P. acnes. Although people of all ages get acne, it may seem as though you have more than your fair share as you begin to go through puberty. That is because during puberty, a hormone called testosterone, in both males and females, increases and causes the body to produce more oil, called sebum. Sebum, together with dead skin cells, clogs pores, which causes acne. Metabolism plays a very important role for maintaining the skin in good condition. The digestive function is also related with cleansing body toxins and improving the water metabolism. Acne skin conditions are actually the result of digestive dysfunction such as constipation, diarrhea and IBS. Skin also reacts negatively to the use of alcohol, nicotine, drugs or other chemical products.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can balance abnormal hormone levels, aid internal detoxification, strengthen immunity, expel toxins and hydrate the skin in the treatment of acne. Facial herbal- aroma-massage is a skin care technique based on historical tradition and empirical wisdom to achieve a healthy skin condition.

  • Hair Loss

Hair loss is a cause for serious concern which can occur in both young or middle-aged men. With the exception of hereditary factors, these problems are largely related to hormone imbalance, tension, and gastrointestinal malfunction. Through the use of acupuncture and herbal medicine, the endocrine system can be adjusted to help tonify the blood or tranquilize the gastrointestinal function, which can result in positive therapeutic effect. Generally, patients will notice a difference after approximately 10 treatments.

  • Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction has always been a major concern for middle-aged men. Tension, stress, insufficient nutrition, excessive sex, or weak constitution can all contribute to the development of sexual dysfunction. TCM works to promote sexual function by tonifying the kidney, adjusting yin and yang, and balancing hormone levels. One of the important factors within the treatment procedure is to keep the body’s jing and qi sufficient. Jing is the material basis which maintains sexual function, while qi is associated with erection strength, duration and the ability to control ejaculation during intercourse. Presently there are many pharmaceutical medications on the market which emphasize the latter while neglecting the former. In TCM theory, this is not considered an appropriate course of treatment. According to the theory of interdependence of yin and yang, the best course of action to maintain the sexual function of men is to support the “nurturing and promoting” and the “producing and supplementing” function of the body’s jing.

  • Prostate Conditions

The prostate is part of a man's sex organs. It's about the size of a walnut and surrounds the tube called the urethra, located just below the bladder. A man's prostate slowly grows larger with age. If it gets too large, it can cause problems. This is very common after age 50.

Some common problems are

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) - an enlarged prostate, which may cause dribbling after urination or a need to go often, especially at night. Treatment generally is not necessary unless the symptoms of BPH bother you. Treatment can lessen the symptoms but rarely eliminates them. Few men have symptoms or complications severe enough to require surgery.
  • Prostatitis - an infection, usually caused by bacteria. Treatment depends on the type of prostatitis.
  • Prostate Cancer - a common cancer that responds best to treatment when detected early.

In TCM theory, jing (essence) is fundamental to men’s health. Preventative healthcare which includes the TCM methods of kidney tonification, blood activation, and detoxification can help protect men from diseases of the prostate such as prostate enlargement, prostatitis, or prostate cancer. This preventive therapy can begin to be administered in patients as young as forty-five years old. Through acupuncture, acupressure, adjustment of the frequency of one’s sex life, and the instruction of a special scrotum massage exercise, the probability of developing prostate conditions is greatly reduced. Treatment with Chinese herbs and acupuncture can markedly improve the patient’s immune function and control and reduce the incidence of prostate cancer. Prostate disorder can affect sex life, too. Moxibustion, acupuncture, and herbal tonics for men can be used to promote and maintain sexual function.

Chinese Medical Therapy helps treat prostate disorders by:

  • Relieve the symptoms of urinary dysfunction
  • Reduce the PSA level (a target figure of prostate cancer)
  • Build the immune system
  • Improve sexual function

Acupuncture is used for prostate treatment to reduce the symptoms, build the immune system and control the infection. For patients with prostate disorders, it is recommended to receive twice weekly acupuncture treatments for 3 weeks. When the urination has returned to normal, the patient may receive weekly acupuncture treatments for an additional 4 weeks. We then recommend monthly acupuncture therapy as follow-up maintenance care.

Chinese Herbal Medicine is playing a very important role in both preventing and treating prostate disorder. “Qian Lie Kang” herbal formula helps patients with prostate enlargement and prostatitis. It alleviates immediate symptoms like painful, difficult, and frequent urination, as well as provides long-term maintenance for the middle-aged and elderly male by supporting a healthy prostate and sexual function. This formula supplements the kidney energy, clears heat, and breaks up stasis. “Qian Lie Kang” can also benefit those who are at risk due to high PSA levels or those with higher than normal PSA levels but whose prostate biopsy reveals negative findings, since it can boost the immune function and balance the hormone system.

  • Sports Injuries

Physical activity is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle, especially for men’s daily and social life. However, when done incorrectly, sports injuries may occur. This is becoming an important public health issue for both children and adults. As a result, injury prevention efforts need to go beyond targeting children and start addressing the risks faced by physically active adults as well. Adults don’t necessarily have the flexibility they had when they were younger; they may lack strength training, and their aerobic capacity is not great.

Sports injuries refers to many different body traumas, such as ankle sprains, dislocated shoulder, groin pulls, knee trauma, separated shoulder, hamstring pull, and torn ACL. Acupuncture points are selected according to the distribution of the meridians to treat the injury and alleviate pain. Research has shown that: stimulation of acupuncture points can suppress or reduce pain signals in certain areas of the body. Acupuncture can activate the regulatory system of pain sensation within the brain and elevate the pain threshold. Acupuncture can also promote the secretion of various analgesic transmitters of the central nervous system such as 5-TH, endorphin, and morphine-like substances.

Subsequently, a medicated diet is prescribed for correcting the imbalance of yin and yang which may result from the injury of the soft tissue, thereby healing the body of any abnormal state and helping prevent future mishaps. On the other hand, if the injury involved that of the bone or cartilage, then mainly herbal remedies would be employed added to a therapeutic diet to gradually restore the injured material, strengthen the overall body condition, and prolong the healthy state of the tissues that surround and protect the bones.

  • Obesity

Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. In TCM theory obesity is related to the overall body’s health condition and can come about as a result of metabolic imbalance, hormonal disorders, stress, digestive system dsyfunction, and toxicity in the body. It is also related to the person’s living environment and his/her daily lifestyle. The TCM diagnoses for obesity include Qi deficiency, dampness in the body, or Qi stagnation.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for weight loss has been used for more than a thousand years. It treats body organ or system disorders to achieve a healthy weight standard. It can improve the metabolism and balance the endocrine hormones through lowering the glucose in the blood, increasing adrenal activity, boosting fat metabolism and controlling cravings or desires for food and sugar. The treatment methods include acupuncture, tui na acupressure, herbal-aroma massage therapy, Moxibustion, herbal diet therapy and exercise.

  • Concentration/ Memory / Dementia

In TCM theory, the brain is the host of the body’s jing (essence). Therefore, the tonification of the kidney, essence, and bone marrow is an important approach to improving concentration and memory.

Acupuncture, especially scalp needle technique had been shown to effectively promote blood circulation, and applying brain-wakening therapy is vital to the normal functioning of the brain. Chinese herbs are superb brain tonics. In addition, acupuncture increases the blood supply of the brain and slows the sclerosis process of the neural arteries. Head or scalp acupressure is also commonly adopted in the prevention of senile sclerosis of neural arteries and senile dementia.

Through clearing the channels within the head, acupressure on the acupuncture points and special procedures called “open heavenly doors” or “eight claws” with rubbing, pressing, and other techniques, the TCM practitioner will perform the therapy best suited to increase qi and blood supply to the head. Regularly scheduled treatments will benefit the head region by relieving fatigue and tension, promoting the recovery of brain function, increasing memory, and preventing degenerative changes in the brain cells.

  • Recommend Healthcare Plan for Men

Summer moxibustion is a traditional TCM therapy which is applied annually. It is best performed during the summer as the pores of the skin open wider and outer substances are more easily absorbed. Moxibustion can be done year-round to treat different diseases. For preventive care, it is best performed three times a year during the First, Middle, and End Summer, all of which fall between June and August according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Moxibustion is the harmless, painless burning of special herbs on the body for quick absorption. Different points are employed for specialized treatments. For men’s health care purposes, it often placed on the lower abdomen to enhance sexual energy. It is also called “anti-aging therapy “or “the second spring youth therapy” because of natural stimulation of the sex hormones.

  • Winter Male Tonic (Da Bu Gao)

The main functions of these revitalizing tonics are to nourish the QI and the blood, enhance immunological response, regulate hormone levels, improve metabolism, strengthen the constitution, and delay the onset of senility.

The development needs of different age groups are met by varying the herbs added to the base formulas, for example:

Adults (15 to 40 years of age) - People in this age group, in the course of establishing careers and families, require physical strength and energy in order to meet everyday stress. In this group, lack of attention to and negligence towards bodily needs usually result in exhaustion and burn out. Early and prompt correction avoids damage to the YUAN QI (the source of one’s strength and energy) and avoids the onset of early senility. In TCM theory, “to treat disease before its onset” is strongly emphasized. Therefore, it is advisable to undertake certain measures such as taking DA BU GAO tonic preventatively, in order to nourish the QI, build blood, and regulate the YIN and YANG. This will result in enough energy and physical strength for life, study, and work. Males can still have sufficient energy for sexual activity, even after intense physical and mental work.

Middle-Age (40 to 60 years of age) - At this age, the physiological functions tend to decrease. The skin loses its resilience and hair can become sparse. In severe cases, many additional health problems may arise, such as soreness or pain in shoulders and back, excessive perspiration, hot flashes, etc. At this age males may feel deficient in their physical strength and energy and weaker in their mental capacity and sexual performance. Middle age is the stage at which the bodily functions of various organs may start to decline. This is an excellent time for herbal medicines like DA BU GAO to be utilized to nourish the blood, supplement the body essence, maintain health, and postpone senility.

Seniors (above 60 years of age) - during this time, the functions of the various organs have all begun their decline. Based on the individual’s needs and condition, herbal medicines taken during this time can assist the organs in continuing their normal function, as well as benefit the QI, nourish the heart blood, strengthen the spleen, promote urination, and strengthen blood and bones.

Sexual Health Care

Sexuality is an integral part of being human. Love, affection, and sexual intimacy contribute to healthy relationships and a person's happiness. But, along with the positive aspects of sexuality, there are also illnesses that can affect our sexual health. However, by taking precautions to protect ourselves, we can stay well.

Sexual life healthcare in Traditional Chinese Medicine is known as the “intermingling of yin and yang.” As an instinctive pursuit of humans, sex is of great importance, in terms of its role in health, aging, and the causes of illness. Hence, Chinese medicine places considerable importance on the healthcare of sex.

  • Sexual Organs and Response Cycle

The Female Sexual Organs are referred to as the following: Labia majora, which translates to "large lips," and are comparable to the scrotum in males. The labia majora contain sweat and oil-secreting glands. Labia minora translated as "small lips," lie just inside the labia majora and surround the opening to the vagina. Bartholin's glands are located besides the vaginal opening and produce a fluid (mucus) secretion. The clitoris, where the two labia minora meet, is a small, sensitive protrusion that is comparable to the penis in males. Like the penis, the clitoris is very sensitive to stimulation and can become erect. The vagina is a canal that joins the cervix (the lower part of uterus) to the outside of the body. It also is known as the birth canal.

The Male Sexual Organ is referred to as the Penis which is used in sexual intercourse. The glans, or head of the penis contains a number of sensitive nerve endings. The body of the penis is cylindrical in shape and consists of 3 circular shaped chambers that are made up of special, sponge-like tissue. This tissue contains thousands of large spaces that fill with blood when the man is sexually aroused. As the penis fills with blood, it becomes rigid and erect, which allows for penetration during sexual intercourse. The skin of the penis is loose and elastic to accommodate changes in penis size during an erection. Semen which contains sperm is ejaculated through the end of the penis when the man reaches sexual climax (orgasm). The scrotum hangs behind the penis and contains the testicles as well as many nerves and blood vessels. Testicles (testes) are responsible for making testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, and for generating sperm as well as maintain the sexual function.

[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"]

The sexual response cycle has four phases: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Both men and women experience these phases, although the timing usually is different. For example, it is unlikely that both partners will reach orgasm at the same time. In addition, the intensity of the response and the time spent in each phase varies from person to person. Understanding these differences may help partners better understand one another's bodies and responses, and enhance the sexual experience.

Excitement phase can last from a few minutes to several hours. It includes an increase in muscle tension as well as blood flow to the genitals, resulting in swelling of the woman's clitoris and labia minora (inner lips). Vaginal lubrication begins and the vaginal walls begin to swell. The man's testicles swell, his scrotum tightens, and he begins secreting a lubricating liquid.

Plateau phase could become intensified: vaginal walls turn a dark purple, the woman's clitoris becomes highly sensitive (may even be painful to touch) and retracts under the clitoral hood to avoid direct stimulation from the penis, the man's testicles are withdrawn up into the scrotum and Muscle tension increases.

Orgasm phase is the climax of the sexual response cycle. It is the shortest of the phases and generally lasts only a few seconds. In women, the muscles of the vagina contract and the uterus also undergoes rhythmic contractions. In men, rhythmic contractions of the muscles at the base of the penis result in the ejaculation of semen. There is a sudden, forceful release of sexual tension and a “sex flush" may appear over the entire body.

Resolution phase, the body slowly returns to its normal level of functioning, and swelled and erect body parts return to their previous size and color. This phase is marked by a general sense of well-being, enhanced intimacy and, often, fatigue. Some women are capable of a rapid return to the orgasm phase with further sexual stimulation and may experience multiple orgasms. Men need recovery time after orgasm, called a refractory period, during which they cannot reach orgasm again. The duration of the refractory period varies among men and usually lengthens with advancing age.

  • Sexual Dysfunction and TCM Care

Erectile Dysfunction (also known as impotence) is defined as a man’s inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It can originate from either psychological or physiological factors. Many physical and/or medical conditions can cause problems with sexual function. These conditions include diabetes, heart disease, neurological diseases, hormonal imbalances and chronic diseases such as kidney disease or liver failure, and alcoholism and drug abuse. In addition, the side effects of certain medications, including some antidepressant drugs, can affect sexual desire and function. Psychological causes include work-related stress and anxiety, concern about sexual performance, marital or relationship problems, depression, feelings of guilt, and the effects of a past sexual trauma.

Acupuncture with moxibustion has been clinically shown to help restore proper sexual function by increasing male hormonal levels and promoting the production of healthy sperm cells. Scrotum and testicle massage with essential herbal oil is a special TCM therapy for maintaining sexual energy, promoting good heath and boosting anti-aging effects.

Please see our brochure or download “Men’s Healthcare” for more information.

Ejaculation Disorders: Premature ejaculation refers to ejaculation that occurs before or soon after penetration. It may be caused by a lack of attraction for a partner, or past traumatic events and psychological factors, including a strict religious background that causes the person to view sex as sinful. Inhibited or retarded ejaculation refers to ejaculation that is slow to occur. Retrograde ejaculation occurs when, at orgasm, the ejaculate is forced back into the bladder rather than through the urethra and out the end of the penis. Acupuncture with sacrum acupressure could treat both physical and psychological Ejaculation Disorders. Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese treatment frequently used for treating erectile dysfunction and ejaculation disorders.

Painful intercourse can be brought about as a result of a number of conditions, including endometriosis, a pelvic mass, ovarian cysts, vaginitis, poor lubrication, the presence of scar tissue from surgery, or a sexually transmitted disease. A condition called vaginismus is a painful, involuntary spasm of the muscles that surround the vaginal entrance. It may occur in women who fear that penetration will be painful and also may stem from a sexual phobia or from a previous traumatic or painful experience. Acupuncture combined with Tui Na acupressure is very useful for helping muscle relaxation and easing the symptoms. Herbal-aroma therapy is very effective for healing and preventing muscle spasms and it is suggested that it is applied before intercourse.

Inhibited sexual desire involves a lack of sexual desire or interest in sex. Many factors can contribute to a lack of desire, including hormonal changes, medical conditions and treatments (for example cancer and chemotherapy), depression, pregnancy, stress and fatigue. Boredom with regular sexual routines may also contribute to a lack of enthusiasm for sex, as can lifestyle factors, such as careers and the care of children. Moxibusion is highly recommended for increasing sexual desire.

Inability to become aroused during sexual activity often involves insufficient vaginal lubrication. It may also be related to anxiety or inadequate stimulation. Lack of orgasm (anorgasmia) can be caused by sexual inhibition, inexperience, lack of knowledge and psychological factors such as guilt, anxiety, or a past sexual trauma or abuse. Other factors contributing to anorgasmia include insufficient stimulation, certain medications, and chronic diseases. The Chinese herbal formula “Yang Yin Jian” is often used for promoting more vaginal lubrication. “Xiao Yao Wan” also called “free and easy wanderer” is used to treat stress and depression. Herbal-aroma serum made up of Rose, Jasmine and Dang Gui is recognized as a “female secret treasure” for improving the ability to reach orgasm.

Genital Itching can be a symptom of many conditions which may include vaginal infections in females or jock itch in males. In either sex, itching may be caused by skin irritation, sexually transmitted diseases and allergies. In many cases, genital itching that is caused by irritation will clear up on its own if the irritation is removed. Other causes of itching may require more intensive treatment. If you are concerned about genital itching that does not go away, consult with your acupuncturist. Bathing with herbal serums is the most common and effective treatment for this condition. Various herbs are prescribed according to the specific diagnosis.

Genital Herpes is a highly contagious infection usually spread through intercourse with a person with active sores, but it can be passed through oral or anal sex as well. It may also be spread even when sores are not visible. Genital herpes can also interrupt sexual desire since it might bring pain and discomfort during intercourse. Herbal formula Herpease /BZQ has been shown to help patients who have pain and broken skin in the genital or oral area. It can clear the infection and inflammation, ease pain, and help skin recover.

Vaginal Dryness often occurs during menopause as a result of lower levels of the hormone estrogen causing changes in the vagina. These changes can result in less lubrication and a feeling of vaginal dryness. For many women, these vaginal changes can cause other uncomfortable symptoms, such as itching, burning, and irritation. Sexual relations may also be difficult, or even painful. There are things you can do to manage these changes if they bother you. Herbal serums could be used for either rubbing or bathing to ease the discomfort. If the patient is suffering with menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness, hot flashes, or night sweats, Acupuncture and herbal therapy will be a great choice in providing relief. The Herbal formula Menopex / GNL is an effective natural herbal product that relieves such symptoms.

Chinese Medicine offers many ways to help heal infection or inflammation of sexual organs, skin rashes, skin irritation, and vaginal dryness from hormonal changes during menopause. There are other health concerns that may affect women’s sexual life such as Endometriosis, Uterine Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts, all of which may also benefit from treatment with acupuncture and herbs.

  • Lifestyle and Sexual Health Care

A number of illnesses are related to one’s insufficient understanding of sex. Lack of knowledge on proper sexual positions, the detachment of the body and spirit during intercourse, and incorrect genital hygiene are responsible for the spread of diseases. For instance, during puberty, premature sexual intercourse can injure the undeveloped ovararian function and cause subsequent disorders, menstrual irregularity, or menstrual cramps for girls. For boys, the incorrect understanding of nocturnal emission might generate stress, depression, and possible sexual malfunctions.

Harsh sex will probably cause the insufficient secretion of female sex hormones and vaginal fluids, which may lead to the infection and erosion of vaginal walls. At the same time, harsh sex may also result in inflammation of the male genitals. During pregnancy and after labor, inappropriate care of one’s sex life may lead to miscarriage and vaginal infection. Excessive sex on the part of males will also lead to premature aging. Hence, Chinese medicine emphasizes education about sex and sexual health in order to reduce and prevent the occurrence of disorders.

Excessive binding of the breasts and wearing tight underwear can respectively cause the deficiency of breast growth and vaginal inflammation in young women. For young males, tight underwear can result in inflammation of the scrotum and abnormal sperm. Misconceptions regarding masturbation can cause tension, depression, or psychological burdens, which might lead to spermatorrhea.

A health daily lifestyle plays a very important role in maintaining sexual function. Meanwhile, having a well-designed sexual health care plan will achieve beneficial results. Moxibustion and perineal massage with herbal serums are the typical TCM therapy recognized as the “Palace Secret Formula”from the Tang Dynasty, for improving and maintaining sexual energy. It is used to increase pleasure and satisfaction in the sexual response cycle and the ability to reach full orgasmic response.

  • Sexual Behavior and Orientation

Masturbation

Masturbation is the self-stimulation of the genitals to achieve sexual arousal and pleasure, usually to the point of orgasm (sexual climax). It is commonly done by touching, stroking or massaging the penis or clitoris until an orgasm is achieved. Some women also use stimulation of the vagina to masturbate or use "sex toys," such as a vibrator.

While it once was regarded as a perversion and a sign of a psychological disorder, masturbation is now is regarded as a normal, healthy sexual activity that is pleasant, fulfilling, acceptable and safe. It is a good way to experience sexual pleasure and can be done throughout life.

Masturbation is only considered a problem when it inhibits sexual activity with a partner, is done in public, or causes significant distress to the person. It may cause distress if it is done compulsively and/or interferes with daily life and activities. Scalp acupuncture technique is a specific method for helping control this abnormal sexual urge.

Oral Sex

Oral Sex has become far more popular. This is only natural since many believe oral sex is a safe activity. Unfortunately, as research is tending to show, it too is a high-risk activity. Not only is HIV present in semen, pre-ejaculate, vaginal secretions, and menstrual blood, but oral sex today is quite different than oral sex of yesteryear. The mouth, for many, has essentially replaced the vagina or anus as the intercourse orifice of choice, with far more vigorous thrusting. In fact, oral sex, which in the 1980s was not considered a major risk factor, has now become a major risk factor in HIV transmission.

It has also been found that people who vigorously brush or floss their teeth before or after oral sex are also at greater risk of contracting HIV. And if you’re male partner has cuts on his penis, then the risk of HIV infection is even higher. If you’re engaging in a frequent oral sex, other STDs, such as gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis can also originally manifest as throat infections. In fact, throat-based gonorrhea, which is generally not tested for, has increased dramatically, particularly in the gay community.

TCM theory does not encourage oral sex because it is regarded as unnatural and unhealthy. However, there is an herbal serum designed especially as a mouth gargle that is highly recommended to be used before and after engaging in oral sex.

Sexual Addiction

Sexual Addiction is used to describe the behavior of a person who has an unusually intense sex drive or obsession with sex. Sex and the thought of sex tend to dominate the sex addict's thinking, making it difficult to work or engage in healthy personal relationships. Sex addicts engage in distorted thinking, often rationalizing and justifying their behavior and blaming others for their problems. They generally deny they have a problem and make excuses for their actions.

Sexual addiction is also associated with risk-taking. In addition to damaging the addict's relationships and interfering with his or her work and social life, a sexual addiction also puts the person at risk for emotional and physical injury. For some people, the sex addiction progresses to involve illegal activities.

Just as acupuncture is an effective treatment for quitting smoking or drinking, acupuncture is also effective for helping sexual addiction problems by adjusting brain waves, balancing hormones, relieving stress and detoxifying abnormal excess chemistry. Meditation plays a very important role in reducing excessive urges and promoting holistic body healing

Sexual Orientation

Sexual Orientation involves a person's feelings and sense of identity; it may or may not be evident in the person's appearance or behavior. People may have attractions to people of the same or opposite sex but may elect not to act on these feelings. For example, a bisexual may choose to have a monogamous (one partner) relationship with one gender and, therefore, elect not to act on the attraction to the other gender. Sexual orientation is generally divided into 3 categories: Heterosexual: attracted to individuals of the opposite sex, Bisexual: attracted to members of either sex, Homosexual: attracted to individuals of one's own sex.

Most scientists today agree that sexual orientation is the result of a combination of environmental, emotional, hormonal, and biological factors. In other words, there are many factors that contribute to a person's sexual orientation, and the factors may be different for different people.

In TCM theory gay men or lesbians do not undergo the “intermingling of yin and yang” in their sexual life through intercourse with the opposite gender, so they do not have the sexual hormones transferred through intercourse to benefit natural health.

Generally speaking, in TCM theory women receive natural hormones stimulated when the men release semen into the vagina during sexual intercourse. In TCM this is referred to as “nourishing the yin from the yang.” In the same way, men also have the opportunity to receive stimulation of female hormones through sex, or men can place their genitals in the vagina without ejaculation to stimulate the natural hormone exchange. Both techniques are called “nourishing the yang from the yin.” This is the reason that intercourse between a man and a woman will benefit the male and female sexual hormones.

Homosexuals do not receive natural sexual hormone stimulation through sexual activity since they have the same gender partner. Therefore, it is more important to care for hormone balance among homosexuals. TCM has special acupuncture points for balancing hormone levels to relieve mental stress. Additionally, TCM recommends certain herbal formulas and dietary therapy to meet their special sexual life needs.

New research shows that homosexuals’ stress level and sexual lifestyle has a tremendous affect on their immune system function, thus contributing to different immune disorders. It is therefore recommended that they consider preventive care to strengthen their immune system, improve energy, balance hormones, relieve stress, and prevent immune system disorders.

  • TCM View on Healthy Sexuality

The human body is like a car that eventually wears out with use. When the functions of various organs diminish, senile degenerative diseases result. The key to senior healthcare is the issue of anti-aging. Although aging is inevitable, in Traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) theory, it can be delayed. The anti-aging therapies advocated by TCM include three categories of therapeutic methods: tonifying qi and Jing (essence), removing blood stasis, and regulating the spleen and stomach. In order to promote body activity and reduce degenerative processes, the recommended therapeutic method is chosen in accordance with the patient’s individual condition.

  • Bone and Joint Care

Osteoarthritis is a disease of the cartilage in joints which often afflicts seniors. It is associated with degenerative changes in the bones and joints which cause progressive breakdown of cartilage until the bones, which were once separated by cartilage, rub against each other. This results in damage to the tissue and underlying bone, causing the painful joint symptoms of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is a major source of pain and disability in older adults. It most often affects the joints of the fingers, hips, knees, feet, or spine. Osteoarthritis however, results in less inflammation than other types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes bones to become so thin that they can break during normal daily activities, such as lifting a heavy object or rolling over in bed. Whether you develop osteoporosis or loss of bone mass (osteopenia) depends on the thickness of your bones early in life as well as health, diet, and physical activity later in life. Osteoporosis usually develops over many years without symptoms. The first signs of osteoporosis commonly occur in the middle and older adult years and include symptoms such as: getting shorter in height, developing a curved upper back (dowager's hump), back pain, and broken bones (fractures.) The bones that are most often broken include the small bones of the spine (vertebrae), hip, and wrist. Even a minor injury can lead to a broken bone.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"]

Both osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are clinical manifestations of degenerated bones. TCM theory asserts the interconnection of kidney energy, bone marrow, and Jing (essence). Thus, nurturing Jing is believed to be vital in the prevention of these disorders. Clinically, the decrease of estrogen in post-menopausal females is one of the main causes of osteoporosis, while the insufficiency of calcium and improper ratio between calcium and phosphate are the main factors in bone degeneration and difficulty in movement. Moxbustion and Herbal tonics combined are the most effective treatment principles for improving the blood circulation, strengthening bone density and reducing inflammation. Herbal formulas can be used to tonify kidney Jing and activate the essence to enhance the quality of bone cells, promote the blood supply to the soft tissues surrounding the joints, and restore the elasticity of tendons and muscles. In this way, the degenerative changes of bones can be mitigated.

Preventative care includes:

  • Weight control: Being overweight puts extra strain on the joints. Controlling excess weight is recommended to prevent or lessen joint damage and decrease the stress on arthritic joints
  • Injury prevention: Preventative therapy protects joints from serious injury or even minor repetitive stress injuries to decrease the risk of cartilage damage.
  • Exercise: Light to moderate intensity physical activity can help reduce joint pain and stiffness and may prevent a decline in, or even restore, overall health and function.

  • Cardiovascular Healthcare

Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure, sometimes called arterial hypertension, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. High blood pressure can damage your arteries, heart, and kidneys, and lead to atherosclerosis and stroke. Hypertension is often referred to as a "silent killer'' because, unless it is severely high, it does not necessarily cause symptoms but can result in major organ damage if not treated.

High cholesterol - Cholesterol is required to establish proper membrane permeability and fluidity. In addition to its importance within cells, cholesterol also serves as a precursor for the biosynthesis of steroid hormones, bile acids, and vitamin D. Elevated levels of the cholesterol in the blood, however, are frequently associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

Diabetes is a lifelong condition in which sugar (glucose) remains in the blood rather than entering the body’s cells to be used for energy. This results in persistently high blood sugar, which, over time, can damage many body systems. Symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst and frequent urination (especially at night), unexplained increase in appetite, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, blurred vision, and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet (neuropathy). People who have diabetes are at increased risk for many serious health problems, including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and heart disease, disorders of the eye that can ultimately lead to blindness, disorders of the circulatory and nervous systems, and kidney disease leading to kidney failure.

Coronary artery disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on the inside of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. Plaque is made up of excess cholesterol, calcium, and other substances that float in the bloodstream and, over time, build up on the inside walls of the coronary and other arteries.

According to TCM theory, the key factors in preventing cardiovascular disease are:

  • Ensuring an ample and healthy supply of heart Qi and blood to sustain the forceful contractions of heart muscles and a normal output of blood to the rest of the body.
  • Maintaining the condition of vessels, freeing them of obstructions in order to preserve elasticity, and monitoring the pressure exerted on the vessel walls.
  • Keeping a well-adjusted mood that will reduce the psychological pathogenic factors of cardiovascular disease to the lowest level possible.

Acupuncture using points specific for this purpose, can increase the oxygen supply to the heart, regulate blood pressure, and soothe the nervous system. Regular stimulation of these points provides a preventive measure against cardiovascular diseases without the potential side effects of pharmaceuticals.

According to the specific health condition of the patient, herbal formulas are often administered for the prevention of those cardiovascular diseases that are caused by obstruction and degeneration of blood vessels. Chinese herbs, such as ginseng, have a positive influence on the contractility and oxygen supply of cardiac muscles. Chinese herbal formulas for the treatment of cardiovascular conditions are categorized into three major functions, which include reducing cholesterol, strengthening the heart function, and regulating blood pressure. Eastern nutritional dietary therapy is used to nourish brain cells, improve circulation and help restore normal cerebral blood flow. These herbs are quite neutral in nature, and thus can be used for patients of all ages. Overall, a regular preventive therapy program using TCM is quite an effective measure in relieving the symptoms of hypertension, diabetes, and other cardiovascular diseases.

  • Senior Mental Healthcare

Concentration/Memory/Dementia - In TCM theory, the brain is the host of the body’s Jing (essence). Therefore, the tonification of the kidneys, essence, and bone marrow is an important approach toward improving concentration and memory, as well as in the treatment of diseases of senile dementia such as Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive condition that affects areas of the brain involved in memory, intelligence, judgment, language, and behavior. It is the most common form of mental decline, or dementia, in older adults. It is more severe than the mild memory loss that many people experience as they grow older. In recent years, senile dementia or Alzheimer’s disease has become an increasingly widespread health condition in the United States. Acupuncture, especially scalp needle technique, had been shown to effectively promote blood circulation, and applying brain-wakening therapy is vital to the normal functioning of the brain. Chinese herbs are superb brain tonics. In addition, acupuncture increases the blood supply of the brain and slows hardening of the neural arteries (sclerosis). Head or scalp acupressure is also commonly used in the prevention of senile sclerosis of neural arteries and senile dementia. Through clearing the channels within the head, using acupressure and special procedures known as “open heavenly doors” or “eight claws” with rubbing, pressing, and other techniques, the TCM practitioner will perform the therapy best suited to increase qi and blood supply to the head. Regularly scheduled treatments will benefit the head region by relieving fatigue and tension, promoting the recovery of brain function, increasing memory, and preventing degenerative changes in the brain cells.

Loneliness and Depression are emotional conditions that carry physical repercussions. Loneliness and social isolation have been associated with health conditions such as immune deficiency, heart conditions, abnormal blood pressure and digestive disorders. As we age, and as social networks thin due to friends and family moving away or dying, immune function diminishes. Group activities such as reading, exercise, tea parties and companion animals have been shown to be effective forms of therapy. Volunteer work, teaching and charitable endeavors will help the elderly recover self-confidence and a sense of purpose.

  • Sexuality in Later Life

Normal aging brings physical changes in both men and women. These changes sometimes affect one's ability to have and enjoy sexual intercourse with a partner.

Women may notice vaginal changes. As a woman ages, her vagina shortens and narrows. The walls become thinner and less pliable. Many women also suffer from decreased vaginal lubrication, which may affect sexual pleasure.

As men get older, impotence becomes more common. Impotence is the loss of ability to have and keep an erection sufficient to engage in sexual intercourse. A man may also find it takes longer to get an erection. His erection may not be as firm or as large as it used to be. The amount of ejaculate may decrease. The loss of erection after orgasm may occur more quickly, or the refractory period between erections may become longer. Some men may find they require more foreplay in order to achieve erection. By age 65, approximately 15 to 25% of men experience bouts of impotence in at least one out of every four attempts at intercourse. This may come about as a result of heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes-either due to the disease state or the medications used in treatment. Illness, disability, or medication may all impact one’s ability to participate in and enjoy an active sex life.

For example:

  • Arthritis- Joint pain due to arthritis can make sexual contact uncomfortable.
  • Chronic pain- pain that continues for more than a month or recurs over time may be caused by bone and/or muscle disorders, shingles, poor blood circulation, or blood vessel disorder This discomfort can, in turn, lead to sleep disorders, depression, isolation, and immobility, all of which can interfere with intimacy between the elderly.
  • Diabetes- While many men with diabetes do not experience sexual dysfunction, this is one of the few illnesses that can indeed lead to
  • Heart disease-Narrowing and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) can impact blood vessels so that blood does not flow freely, also potentially leading to erectile dysfunction.
  • Incontinence-Loss of bladder control or leakage of urine is more common as we grow older, especially in women. Stress incontinence may occur, for example, during exercise, coughing, sneezing, or lifting. Due to the extra pressure on the abdomen during sexual intercourse, fear of incontinence might lead some to avoid sexual intimacy.

Acupuncture and moxibustion play an important role in helping maintain sexual energy. It not only benefits one’s ability to perform sexually, but also improves and balances sexual hormone levels by strengthening “Kidney Jing”- the essential energy of the body. Herbal tonics are the most effective means to maintain the sexual function. Scrotum and testicle massage with = herbal essential oils is a specificTCM therapy for increasing sexual desire, and promoting well being and anti-aging.

  • Recommend Exercise:

Ba Duan Jin – “Eight Style Movements” consists of eight different movements, each of which are simple, short, and effective. It is a quite popular form of exercise as time or location does not restrict one’s practice.

The “Wen” or “Sedentary Style” adopts a seated position with attention to one’s breathing and concentrating the mind. This particular form of exercise incorporates knocking teeth, shaking the head, gargling in the throat, massaging the kidney area, swaying the shoulders, pressing the scalp, stretching the sole of the foot, etc.

Tai Chi Quan emphasizes a combination of action and stillness, yin and yang; activity in the body, but calmness in the mind. The external action is composed of a series of rounded movements, and the inner exercise functions to promote the circulation of Qi and blood under the intention of the mind. This combination is capable of balancing the yin and yang, and strengthening the Qi and blood within the body, to make a person more energetic. Tai Chi has the function of nourishing the Shen, tonifying Qi, strengthening the kidneys, tonifying the spleen, regulating the meridians, and nurturing the tendons, bones, and joints. Moreover, it can be used in supplementing the treatment of neurological, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and musculoskeletal diseases. [/expander_maker]

Children’s Health Care

The physical and emotional health needs of children are given a high priority at Ming Qi Natural Healthcare Center. Programs are structured to include a child’s physical development, intelligence, personality, and general well being. Gentle supportive treatments are offered to bolster the child’s immune, nervous, digestive, and skeletal systems. Tui-na/Acupressure and Herbs, which have had confirmed therapeutic effects, are administered in the prevention and treatment of asthma, allergies, diarrhea, indigestion, myopia, myogenic torticollis, and enuresis. The Key points of Ming Qi Children’s Health Care are:
  • Physical Development
  • Improving Intelligence
  • Strengthening Immunity
  • Strengthening Digestion through Nutrition

  • Regulating the Immune System
Children commonly suffer from colds, bronchitis, coughs, asthma, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and weak digestive systems. Frequent use of antibiotics and/or steroids may temporarily relieve symptoms; however, they carry the risk of unwanted side effects. Tui-na/acupressure and herbal remedies are effective treatment protocols used to enhance and regulate children’s immune systems and promote disease prevention. When children suffer from allergies or ear infections, Tui-na/acupressure, herbal formulas and moxibustion are safe alternatives, which make use of the body’s natural ability to heal. Herbal teas are good for treating both viral or bacterial infections. Gargling with herbal-aroma products is a fast and effective way to treat sore throat, swollen glands and ear infections. Acupressure with herbal aromatherapy will immediately ease the symptoms of acute asthma/allergy attacks. Summer moxibustion is a traditional effective preventive care method to balance the immune system. Herbal tonics taken in the winter are the best way to boost the immune system and prevent disease during the following spring season. [expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"] The treatment protocol would include twice weekly treatments when patients are in the midst of an acute condition, followed by monthly treatments for preventive care. If children suffer from chronic ear infections, such as before or after swimming or traveling on a plane, they would be good candidates for preventative treatment. If a child is ill with asthma or allergies, he or she should receive preventive care with Summer Moxibustion annually.

  • Developing the Skeletal System
For children, good nutrition and digestion are especially important in the development of the skeletal system. Chinese medicinal dietary practices are highly recommended. We suggest oxtail soup, chicken broth, and soup prepared with whole fish (including the head and bones) as the main dietary elements to help a child’s developing bone structure and meet their overall nutritional requirements. For proper development of the skeletal system, a hard mattress is recommended for children as a soft one may contribute to spinal curvature as the child grows taller. Spinal and joint Acupressure is a commonly employed TCM therapy to aid in the development of the back, wrist, shoulder, and hip, knee, and ankle joints. This monthly therapy is recommended for children from the age of 2 to 13 years. Skeletal development and spinal care is very important for children who have a family history of osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. These children require special care to strengthen their bone structure. Furthermore, if parents conceived the child after 40 years of age, their children are more likely to have weaker skeletal systems, since the calcium levels of the parents decline with age. For children who are physically active with activities such as ballet, ice-skating, or sports, special care should be taken to look after the joints and soft tissues depending upon the specific activity undertaken. For girls who practice strenuous activities such as gymnastics, dancing, or sports, special attention must be taken to care for regulating their hormone development to maintain normal menstrual cycles and prevent irregular menses and menstrual cramps. Special herbal formulas can benefit the body’s nutritional supplementation, which aids in both bone marrow growth and hormonal balance.

  • Improving the Digestive System
TCM divides children’s digestive problems into two categories: indigestion and obesity. For indigestion problems, Tui-na / acupressure is applied on the back, abdomen, and leg for half-hour weekly sessions, for a period of six weeks. This treatment can stabilized the nervous system, regulate the stomach and intestinal movement, and strengthen the absorptive and digestive functions. It is very helpful for children who suffer from gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or vomiting. If rich and unhealthy foods are consumed in excess, children can become overweight at a very early age. Overweight children may suffer from hormonal imbalance, stress, and anxiety. Obesity in young girls may lead to developing an abnormal menstrual cycle. A weight loss plan must be first based on the nutritional needs of the child. Children need protein and a nutritious diet to meet the overall needs of their development and growth. Children who are overweight should receive treatment as early as possible to control their weight, as it is unhealthy to stay on a restricted diet for extended periods of time. Diets should be undertaken slowly and in short intervals. Tui-na/acupressure therapy on the scalp, neck, back, and feet is used to balance the metabolism and regulate pituitary function. This treatment, given once or twice a week for a one-hour session, along with a special diet and exercise plan, can help the child lose weight safely and effectively. Pediatric Acupressure places particular emphasis on indigestion as well as asthma, myopia, enuresis, myogenic torticollis, and other ailments.

  • Brain Development and Intelligence
Parents often inquire, “What is a child’s intelligence based upon? Is there anything that can be done to promote intelligence?” In TCM theory, genetics, education, and health care all have a compound effect on a child’s intelligence. Health care includes providing correct nutrition and special dietary plans to improve the brain function. Ox-tail, bone marrow, walnuts, sesame seeds, and Chinese Herbs are commonly used to promote the development of brain cells in children. New research indicates that intelligence is linked with an overall healthy physical condition and life style, as well as proper nutrition. TCM treatment works holistically to help children become physically strong, thereby promoting development of intelligence and improving study habits. Scalp acupressure and specific foot reflexology are recommended to help the brain cells develop and promote circulation. The treatment schedule is a monthly half-hour acupressure session, as well as herbal formulas in capsule or soup form taken daily as a general tonic.

See the information about “Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Care for Fetal Development”. For children with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), the recommended treatment frequency will vary according to each particular case. Reflexology, in conjunction with scalp massage is a beneficial therapy for children with ADHD. Ming Qi Natural Healthcare Center has the distinct advantage of a co-operative relationship with a neurologist, chiropractor, nutritionist, and learning disability therapist to combine Acupuncture / Acupressure with other therapies.

Occupational Healthcare

---A health care plan designed to treat mental stress, injury of soft tissue or vocal cords, damage from environmental conditions, noise and heavy makeup For full-time workers, working hours cumulatively take up almost one-third of their lives; while for those considered a “workaholic”, the hours could consume half a lifetime. Generally, people will spend thirty-five to forty years of their lifetime working. Due to the amount of time spent working, people become vulnerable to the stresses and strains associated with their business and professional life, and social and athletic pursuits. If people recognize, evaluate, and take control over their professional hazards, then their health condition will have noticeable improvements. This is the significance of occupational, professional, and sports healthcare. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a range of treatments suited to correcting injuries in the workplace and athletic fields. These therapies include Acupuncture, Tui Na Acupressure and Herbal Therapy.

  • Intellectuals & Scholars
The category of Intellectuals and Scholars would include such professions as teachers, students, researchers, writers, editors, directors, bankers, accountants, lawyers, managers, professional chess players and others who largely work with their intellect. Stress management is always a major concern for those whose work conditions include long-term mental strain, endlessly busy schedules, demanding project deadlines and high pressure working conditions. Pressure and tension within cerebral vessels, which develops as a result of long-term stress, may lead to a decreased blood flow to the brain, the consequence of which is the gradual appearance of symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, weak concentration, and memory loss.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"] The main treatment recommended to remedy this situation is scalp therapy as it can improve blood circulation in the brain and provide immediate relief of tension. Reflexology brings great benefit for balancing the nervous system, to help alleviate abnormal blood pressure, moodiness, anxiousness, depression, insomnia, and poor concentration and memory. Muscle spasms and tension often occur when people work daily at a desk job. They may develop neck problems from repetitive strain of the local muscles. Acupuncture and Tui-na/Acupressure of the head, neck, and shoulder will invigorate the brain, relieve tension, improve blood supply and tone the muscles. Furthermore, certain Chinese herbs are good for nourishment of the brain cells and are used in both herbal and dietary therapy. Qigong meditation can bring the body to a peaceful state of calmness, free from stress, which helps improve both concentration and memory.

  • Executive Assistants and IT Professionals
Executive Assistants and IT Professionals frequently experience muscular strains in the areas of the neck, shoulder and upper body. Carpal tunnel syndrome has become quite common among professional typists, assistants, pianists, violinists, painters, and hair stylists. Common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are neck and shoulder tension, pain in the wrists radiating to the forearm and palm, reduced strength in the fingers, difficulty in holding a fist and in the movement of the fingers and wrist joints. Acupuncture combined with Tui-na/Acupressure is the recommended course of treatment, which works by loosening muscle spasms, relaxing tension and healing soft tissue damage. It is very beneficial in treating pain in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and related bone damage. Our maintenance care plan includes bi-weekly acupuncture and acupressure treatments to promote relaxation, herbal aromatherapy to aid circulation, reflexology to improve concentration and memory, and tui-na manipulation to increase joint flexibility.

  • The Performing Arts
The category of performing arts refers to singers, dancers, actors, and musicians. They often suffer from disorders particular to their area of specialization. Singers, for example, can strain their larynx, while dancers can injure their lower back, toes or limbs, depending upon the dances they perform. Actors who must wear excessive makeup can suffer from skin disorders and require healing facial massages. Dancers tend to have injuries to various parts of the body. For ballerinas, injuries usually occur in the lower back, foot, or ankle region. The sartorial and the straight muscles of the thigh are also quite susceptible to injury. Male ballet dancers are subject to shoulder or wrist injuries from holding or lifting. Modern dancers usually have contusions and tears in the muscles of the limbs, shoulder and back. For these dancers, aside from their routine pre-performance warm-up, monthly or semi-monthly preventative relaxation treatments are very important. These treatments are very effective in preventing professional injuries. Tui-na/Acupressure is also very effective in this area. Actresses are often on strict diets and may over exert themselves with excessive physical exercise, which frequently results in irregular periods. Herbal remedies are the best solution for balancing their hormonal system without drug intake and the risk of side effects. Acupuncture treatments also regulate pituitary and ovarian function to maintain proper sexual hormone levels. Singers, actors and actresses and drama teachers are often subject to injury of their vocal cords. The causes for injury could be overuse or improper use of the voice, or secondary aphasia caused by common cold, throat infection or vocal polyps. The best treatment option is one in which voice recovery is achieved as quickly as possible in order to meet the demands of this type of work. Chinese herbal formulas may be specially constituted to treat acute infection of the throat as well as swollen vocal cords, by reducing the inflammation of larynx, controlling the infection and healing damage to the voice. There is also a commonly used herbal serum/candy which has been shown to strengthen immunity, relieve edema of the vocal cords and prevent throat infections, as well as help maintain the elasticity of the vocal cords. Specific Acupuncture points are used to prevent the coarseness of the throat and increase circulation in the throat area. Musicians often experience damage to the ears from long-term exposure to load noises. This includes jazz musicians and rock musicians. Those working under constant high volumes of sound, such as truck drivers or construction workers, may also suffer from ear damage and develop professional diplacusis or deafness. Noises can also cause neurasthenia with dizziness, headache, fatigue, loss of memory, and other related symptoms. Proper use of ear protection, intermittent rest and a reasonable diet and nutrition are effective in reducing noise damage. Regular intake of vitamins A and E, Ginseng, Royal Jelly and Er Long Zuo Ci Wan all offer protection for the ears. Black beans, peanuts, red bean, jujube, and tofu are also good for the auricular nerves. Scalp acupressure therapy with herbal oil is recommended to nourish the ear nerves and ease the symptoms. Exercises such as “beating heavenly drum” and Acupuncture points such as Yifen, Waiguan, and Zhongzhu are effective ways to prevent the damage caused by exposure to noise. Actors and actresses working in movies, TV, theater or modeling might experience skin damage from regular heavy makeup use. The skin may suffer from over-stimulation and it is not able to perspire or metabolize as easily. Consequently, the skin can become coarse, allergic, and prone to infections. Acupuncture can regulate the immune system and reduce the body’s allergic reactions. Pearl powder, Ling zhi mushrooms, and Royal Bee serum can increase skin’s resistance, resulting in skin that is smooth and elastic.

  • Professional Athletes
Professional Athletes are often subject to sports injuries and require intervention by specialists in TCM. Basketball players risk injuries to their upper back, swimmers to their legs and ankles, tennis players to their elbows, and, runners and skiers to their lower back, legs and feet. Athletes would be the primary beneficiary of this type of occupational oriented treatment as they are more prone to injuries of the soft tissues, bones, and cartilage. For those with soft tissue damage, acupuncture and acupressure can be used to enhance circulation and increase the flow of Qi and blood to the wounded region. Simultaneously, herbs also work very well for speeding the body’s metabolic rate and intensifying one’s ability to absorb the nutrients needed to repair the tissue. Subsequently, a medicated diet is prescribed for correcting the imbalance of yin and yang which may result from the injury of the soft tissue, thereby healing the body of any abnormal state and helping prevent future mishaps. On the other hand, if the injury involved bone or cartilage, then mainly herbal remedies would be employed with the food to gradually restore the injured material, strengthen the overall body condition, and prolong the healthy state of the tissues that surround and protect the bones.

  • Other Occupational Diseases
Labor related injury includes physical damage to the muscles, tendons, bones, joints and organs. Acupuncture and acupressure are usually the best treatment combination for relieving pain and healing the damage. Environmentally related illnesses often occur when patients who suffer from allergies, cough, shortness breath, headache, skin rashes, asthma, emphysema, and silicosis are exposed to mold, paint, and different chemical preparations. Acupuncture and Herbal aromatherapy are the most effective ways to treat this health condition. By detoxifying the body and strengthening the immunity symptoms will subside. [/expander_maker]

TCM Facial Rejuvenation and Skin Care

Facial Rejuvenation and Wrinkle Care Puffiness and Sagging around Eyes and Chin Acne, Sensitive and Dry Skin Cellulite and Hair Loss

  • The History of Natural Skin Care in TCM
According to classical Chinese texts written over 2,000 years ago on bamboo and found on cave walls, healthy and beautiful skin is interrelated with the body’s circulatory, digestive and hormonal systems, as well as one’s mental condition. There are various “Secret Palace Formulas” from the Tang Dynasty that were used exclusively by the Empress and concubines, which often combined acupuncture, herbal facials, acupressure and special diets (ginseng, bird’s nest, pearl powder, honey, egg white, wild mushroom, cucumber and aloe juice). Seasonal flowers were used for moisturizing and nourishing the skin. Outdoor morning meditation under a canopy of trees was regarded as the best way to alleviate stress and absorb the natural dew. Bathing in spring water was a common method to help the skin stay smooth.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"] Over the evolution of TCM, natural skin care techniques have become scientific and modern. These techniques help people stay healthier and younger, through stimulating immune function and maintaining hormonal balance. They also aid in treating and preventing skin allergies or degenerative changes from overuse of chemical cosmetics. The inherent beauty and vitality of the skin is a true reflection of the inner condition, and is important for the heart and the spirit to retain a true sense of self.

  • Our Skin
Skin is a large and complex organ that is continually “open to inspection by others.” It can be a frequent source of concern for patients of all ages. This organ is the focus of considerable attention in TCM, as it is connected with various meridians. Skin condition is related to the whole body’s circulation, as well as the hormonal, digestive and nervous systems.
  • Facial skin represents a reflection of the internal health condition. Facial observation is a specific diagnostic method used along with pulse and tongue diagnosis. The forehead shows the health of the digestive system, the nose reflects the function of the lungs, the eye region belongs to the liver meridian, and puffy bags under the eyes and flabby chins imply water retention due to slow lymphatic circulation. A proper holistic healthcare plan can help foster the optimum skin condition and beauty by addressing the physical organs and balance of internal systems.
  • Skin condition and sexual hormones are closely related. The skin type evolves from childhood through puberty. Increased testosterone tends to make skin thicker and stronger while estrogen and progesterone influence skin’s appearance making it bright, soft and smooth.
Changing or imbalanced hormones can bring about many skin conditions such as pimples, acne, birthmarks, age spots and various other skin breakouts. During pregnancy, high levels of progesterone make skin puffy and rich looking, but may also result in stretch marked skin. A baby’s sex also affects a pregnant woman’s skin tone, for example, a baby girl results in moister skin for the mother than a baby boy. Acne breakouts are often associated with PMS, long-term use of birth control pills may result in oily, rough skin and menopause is associated with dry and irritated skin as well as age spots.
  • Metabolism plays a very important role in maintaining good skin condition. A healthy metabolism helps burn fat preventing fatty accumulations and cellulite. Acupuncture can help to increase the metabolism and balance hormones. Acupressure with fat-burning herbal cream can reduce dimpling in areas where cellulite accumulates. Cellulite treatments can also help women with lifting and tightening their skin after giving birth or breast-feeding.
  • Blood circulation and mental condition are also considered to have an integral influence on skin condition. Healthy heart and lung function affects the body’s oxygen and nutrition osmosis and promotes youthful and healthy skin. The blood circulation in the neck and upper back region is critical because there are major veins that pass through these areas which benefit the face and hair by carrying the blood to the head. Stress and anxiety often cause tension and tightness in the neck and back, which has a negative impact on the look of our skin.
  • Digestive function affects the body’s absorption of nutrition. It is also associated with cleansing body toxins and improving water metabolism. Many skin conditions are actually the result of digestive dysfunction such as constipation, diarrhea and Skin also reacts negatively to the use of alcohol, nicotine, drugs or other chemical products.

They are mainly used in the treatment of acne, loose skin, freckles, irregular pigmentation, dry skin, hair loss, wrinkles, and under eye puffiness.
  • Seasonal Facial and Skin Care is a specific TCM beauty therapy that follows the change of seasons and applies treatment Spring is the season when the skin breathes and pores open to accept cleansing. It is a good time to nourish the skin. During the summer, the skin perspires due to heat and/or detoxification. This is a good time to cleanse. Autumn is when the pores close and the skin becomes dry. The skin should be moisturized because creams absorb well at this time of the year. During the winter, skin absorbs tonifying herbs and stores energy for the cold season. This is the best time to preserve the skin and body. Monthly maintenance natural facial treatments are recommended for women who are between 40 and 50 years. If you are interested in treating acne, birthmarks, age spots, under eye puffiness, and cellulite, weekly treatments are recommended [/expander_maker]

Smoking Cessation

Acupuncture has been shown to not only help patients quit smoking, but also to be effective in boosting the immune system and preventing weight gain.
  • Harmful Effects of Smoking
Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States, contributing to 430,000 deaths each year. Smoking not only affects the smoker, but their family and friends as well. Many diseases and illnesses develop due to smoking. such as: Heart Attack, Stroke, Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), Cancer (including mouth, throat, esophagus, and lung cancer), worsening of asthma conditions, shortness of breath, impotence and infertility. Using cigars, pipes, or spit tobacco, even though you do not inhale, also increases your risk of developing lung cancer and cancers of the throat and mouth. Chewing tobacco ("chew") and snuff ("dip" or "rub") are spit tobacco products. Use of spit tobacco products have been shown to increase the risk of mouth cancer, gum disease, and tooth loss. Quitting reduces these risks much in the same way as quitting smoking. A person who smokes also subjects their family and friends to such disease risk due to exposure to second hand smoke. Second hand smoke exposure has been shown to increase the risk in children of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory infections, ear infections, and asthma. Smoking may also put pregnant mothers and their fetus at risk.[expander_maker more="Read more" less="Close"] Natural, low-tar, and low-nicotine cigarettes have not been shown to be any safer to smoke than regular cigarettes. Do not be misled into thinking these products are a safer option.

  • Benefit of Quitting Smoking
By quitting, a person who smokes can decrease the risk of having a heart attack and stroke, lung cancer or other cancers, gum disease and other dental problems, as well as infertility and impotence. 10 years of living in a smoke free environment can reduce the chance of developing lung cancer by 30% to 50%. If you are a teen and you smoke, chew tobacco, or use snuff, you probably already know that tobacco is bad for you. If you are like most teens, you intend to quit at some point, but you may not feel it's very important to quit at an early age. However, the longer you use tobacco, the greater your risk for developing a disease and the more likely you are to become dependent on tobacco. If you have been using tobacco for more than a year or so, you have more than an 80% chance of becoming dependent on it. Once you're hooked, it's even harder to quit. Other Benefits of Quitting Smoking Reducing risk of:
  • Heart attack and stroke. Smoking even a few cigarettes a day (1 to 4) increases your risk of coronary artery disease. If a person who smokes has a heart attack, his or her risk of sudden death is twice as great as the risk of a person who does not smoke.
  • Lung cancer and other lung diseases. After 10 years of not smoking, your risk of lung cancer is reduced by 30% to 50%. If you have asthma, you may have fewer and less severe asthma attacks. You will also have fewer respiratory illnesses, such as colds, flu, and pneumonia.

When a person first tries smoking, cigarettes taste bad because the nerves around the nose are not accustomed to the smell. Over time the nicotine accumulation results in the nerve endings becoming more accustomed to the smell of smoke. Once accustomed to the smell and taste, the person eventually will become addicted to the nicotine intake. Acupuncture treatment can detoxify the body of nicotine and balance the nerve sensation. When the patient undergoes acupuncture to quit smoking, the first thing that changes is that the cigarette smell once again becomes unpleasant to them. The patient begins to dislike smoking again. Generally, it takes three sessions to result in a change in the taste of cigarettes. Acupuncture has been clinically shown to help patients quit smoking. New clinical research from Shanghai Shu Guang Hospital has shown five particular acupuncture points to be very effective in helping a patient stop smoking in three days. These five points are more sensitive than regular points used for smoking cessation. Located on the arm, face, and hands, these acupuncture points are gently stimulated for 30 minutes. The effects of the treatment relax the patient, decrease cravings for tobacco, alleviate anxiety and uneasiness, and reduce the physical symptoms of withdrawal. Acupuncture as a means of quitting smoking as compared to other methods (i.e. patches or drugs) is a natural, gentle, and effective treatment. It does not force patients to quit smoking cold turkey; rather, it is gradual and encourages the patients to quit themselves. Patients will feel relaxed and easy in undergoing the treatment session. Stress relief and energy strengthening will be additional goals of the treatment plan. Acupuncture Treatment Schedule Initially, treatments are necessary for three (3) consecutive days. After each treatment, the habitual smoker will feel considerable discomfort on exposure to the smell of tobacco and he/she will have less and less desire to smoke. After the three consecutive treatments, most patients can either quit smoking or cut down to one or two cigarettes a day depending on the individual’s smoking habits. Long time and heavy smokers may need one or two additional treatments. Patients may require weekly maintenance treatments afterwards. When you first quit smoking, you may go through withdrawal and crave cigarettes. You may feel very hungry, cough often, get headaches, feel very tired, or have difficulty concentrating, constipation, a sore throat and difficulty sleeping. Although withdrawal symptoms will be the strongest when you first quit, they should dissipate within a few weeks. Many smokers are concerned about gaining weight when you stop using tobacco. Don't let this stop you. There is a lot more to gain by quitting than a few extra pounds. You will feel better and save money. You may also have fewer health problems. Acupuncture for Maintenance Care In the initial three sessions, Smoking Cessation treatments will reduce the urge for cigarettes, but the body may still need further treatment and proper care to get healthy while stopping the use of nicotine. After the initial treatment, it is very important to continue proper maintenance care. This plan will address:
  • Nicotine detoxification: Acupuncture is effective in reducing bronchial spasms, muscle cramping, mood changes, perspiration, nausea, irritability, insomnia, and fatigue. It can also help improve blood circulation to filter out stored toxins.
